One UI 4.1 update arrives on the Samsung Galaxy A22 5G and three other phones

Samsung is bringing Android 12 with One UI 4.1 to four more A-series smartphones this week, growing its portfolio of handsets that feature the latest version of Android. The devices being updated are the Galaxy A22 5G, Galaxy A21s, Galaxy A03s, and the Galaxy A02s.

Galaxy A22 5G

The 4G edition of the Galaxy A22 picked up the Android 12 update back in May. Now, the Galaxy A22 5G is receiving a taste of Android 12 with One UI Core 4.1 in the form of software version A226BXXU4BVF7. So far, it’s the SM-A226B variant to which the new build has started rolling out in Thailand and Malaysia.

Galaxy A21s

It appears the Android 12 update for the Galaxy A21s is only available in Russia, Taiwan, and Hong Kong at the moment, but it should roll out to additional markets in the coming days. The latest firmware version is identified as A217FZHU8DVF6, which is meant for the SM-A217F model.

Galaxy A03s and Galaxy A02s

The same update of Android 12 with One UI Core 4.1 is also rolling out to the Galaxy A03s (model number SM-A037F) and Galaxy A02s (model number SM-A025F, SM-A025M) in select regions. For the Galaxy A03s, the software version is A037FXXU1BVFB and it is available across several Asian countries. The Galaxy A02s, on the other hand, has received the new build in the form of build A025FXXU4CVF4 in Russia and A025MUBU4CVF4 in Panama.

All of the updated firmware releases include the June 2022 security patch, according to the release notes. Notably, the aforementioned devices skipped One UI 4.0 and jumped directly to 4.1.

As always, the updates are rolling out in batches. Having said that, if you are no stranger to PC-based flashing, you can skip the waiting queue. To do so, grab the latest release directly from the company’s Firmware Update Server (FUS) and flash it manually on your Galaxy device.

XDA forums now available for the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, 12S Pro, 12s, and Asus ROG Phone 6 series

In terms of new smartphone releases, this week was absurd, with several new devices arriving from Xiaomi and Asus. Xiaomi announced four new handsets, three of which have new XDA forums for these devices. Asus also announced its ROG Phone 6 and ROG Phone 6 Pro. We are happy to announce that XDA forums for both phones are also now open.

Xiaomi 12S Ultra

When you first see the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, it’s undeniably making a statement. Its bold style and massive camera on the rear of the phone make it easy to distinguish it from a sea of smartphones. The flagship device not only features good looks but also has a top-of-the-line processor with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC, up to 12GB RAM, and a new 3D cooling system inside the phone to keep things cool.

The smartphone also has a large 6.73-inch adaptive 120Hz AMOLED display with a peak brightness of 1,500 nits and native 10-bit color. You can head to the forums to learn more about the phone by clicking the link below.

Xiaomi 12S Pro

The Xiaomi 12S Pro is the little sibling to the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, but by no means is it a slouch and can easily hold its own. The Xiaomi 12S Pro features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC, up to 12GB RAM, with internal storage of up to 512GB. The handset has a large 6.73-inch 120Hz 2K AMOLED display with a peak brightness of 1,500 nits.

The handset supports 120W wired charging, 50W wireless charging, and 10W reverse wireless charging. It will also have a large 4,600mAh battery with a triple camera setup that uses a 50MP sensor for each lens. If your interest has been piqued, head to our forums.

The Xiaomi 12S features the same design and features as the Xiaomi 12S Pro but comes in a much smaller package. The Xiaomi 12S is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC, will have up to 12GB RAM, and internal storage of up to 512GB. It has a 6.28-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 1,100 nits of peak brightness. Despite its smaller size, it packs a large battery, coming in at 4,500mAh. The phone will support 67W wired charging, 50W wireless, and 10W reverse wireless charging.

Asus ROG Phone 6 and Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro

The Asus ROG Phone 6 series doesn’t break the mold in gaming smartphones, but it certainly offers a lot regarding its specifications. Both phones are nearly identical, with a 6.78-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a 165Hz refresh rate, powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 processor, and making use of a 6,000mAh battery with 65W wired charging.

What distinguishes the two is that the ROG Phone 6 will top out at 16GB LPDDR5 RAM, while the ROG Phone 6 Pro will max out at 18GB LPDDR5 RAM. The ROG Phone 6 Pro will also have a ROG Vision color PMOLED (Passive Matrix) display on the rear, whereas the ROG Phone 6 will instead have an RGB logo that can be customized. A high-end Apple Watch using better materials could arrive in 2022

There is a pretty good chance that we are getting a new Apple Watch this year. Apple has updated its watch yearly since the release of the first one back in 2015. While there have been several different versions, it looks like Apple Watch Series 8 could see a new entry in its lineup — one that is focused on extreme sports athletes.

According to Bloomberg, the new Apple Watch geared towards extreme athletes could arrive with a larger display and bigger battery. But what’s new is that it could offer better protection from physical wear due to its improved materials and design. Apple could adopt a flatter look, which has been rumored for years. The new watch is expected to use a stronger metal than the aluminum or stainless steel found on the current models. It will also have a stronger screen that is more resistant to impacts.

A new higher-end model in the Apple Watch lineup

Although different in design and materials, the watch will have the same feature set as the Apple Watch Series 8. The new watch will have a screen size nearing two inches (1.99-inches to be exact) and will also have a resolution of 410 pixels by 502 pixels. It’s anyone’s guess as to how Apple will utilize the larger screen real estate, but a bigger screen, is always a better thing, especially on a small device. The main draw for this year’s watch is its rumored ability to measure body temperature, which could be used to detect fevers.

Despite being all-new, the new watches might still use the older processor found on the Watch Series 6 and Watch Series 7. Although pricing has not been confirmed, the new entry in the Apple Watch lineup is expected to sit at the highest position, which means it will cost more than the stainless steel model currently being sold.

iOS 16 beta 3 increases security with Lockdown Mode

Today, Apple released iOS 16 beta 3 to its developer community. The new beta offers plenty of new features like iCloud Shared Photo Library, a new wallpaper, new lock screen fonts, and Lockdown Mode. While Apple has been pretty good about keeping its customers’ data private, it is taking things to the extreme with the new Lockdown Mode in the latest beta release.

Ivan Krstić, Security Engineering and Architecture at Apple, describes the feature as:

Lockdown Mode is a groundbreaking capability that reflects our unwavering commitment to protecting users from even the rarest, most sophisticated attacks. While the vast majority of users will never be the victims of highly targeted cyberattacks, we will work tirelessly to protect the small number of users who are. That includes continuing to design defenses specifically for these users, as well as supporting researchers and organizations around the world doing critically important work in exposing mercenary companies that create these digital attacks.

Lockdown Mode will offer the most comprehensive security on iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS Ventura. It will limit communication by disabling attachments to messages and link previews. It will also limit complex web technologies from executing when browsing the internet. Apple services like FaceTime will also have limitations in place, disabling all incoming communications unless initiated. Lastly, configuration profiles and wired connections will be blocked when devices are locked. This might seem extreme, but it is all in place to prevent attacks or exploits from occurring.

Apple states that this is just the beginning of Lockdown Mode, with improvements to come in the future. Because of this, the company has established a new category in the Apple Security Bounty program that specifically focuses on Lockdown Mode. The company is also making a $10 million grant available to the Dignity and Justice Fund. Once again, Lockdown Mode isn’t for your everyday person, but if you want to give it a go, be sure to update to the latest iOS 16 beta.

Asus ROG Phone 6 bootloader unlock tool and kernel source code are already available

The “Republic of Gamers” (ROG) smartphone lineup from Asus is quite popular among mobile gamers. With each generation of ROG phones, the Taiwanese OEM has continued to push the boundary of smartphone hardware. The recently released ROG Phone 6 series is a prime example, offering a 6.78-inch 165Hz AMOLED display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset, up to a whopping 18GB of RAM, a total 6,000mAh battery, 65W fast charging, a 3.5mm headphone jack (yes!), a plethora of gaming features, and much more. Now, in a bid to comply with the requirements of GPL v2 and help the aftermarket development community get the ball rolling on building ROMs and kernels, Asus has released the official bootloader unlock tool and the kernel sources for the ROG Phone 6 and ROG Phone 6 Pro.

For Asus devices, if you want to go down the road of bootloader unlocking, you need to get your hands on a device-specific unlock tool. The ROG Phone 6 series isn’t an exception to this trend. However, keep in mind that the unlocking process completely wipes the phone and disables subsequent OTA updates. Furthermore, an unlocked bootloader may void the warranty for this device. If that’s something that doesn’t bother you, grab the bootloader unlocker app from Asus and go ahead. The same unlock tool is compatible with both the regular ROG Phone 6 and the “Pro” variant.

Asus has also published the kernel sources and the stock firmware for these smartphones, which will come in handy for the third party developers trying to port custom recoveries, kernels, and ROMs after unlocking the bootloader. Notably, the source code archives don’t contain any kind of commit history.

How to use Warm Light on your Kindle for comfortable nighttime reading

All recently released Kindle e-readers come with a built-in front light, which you can activate when reading at night or in the dark. If you like to read at bedtime, the blue light emitted by the white front light may disrupt your sleep or lead to eye strain.

Thankfully, some Kindle models come equipped with Warm Light that adds a nice yellow-orange tint to the display for a comfortable reading experience. Similar to your phone’s night mode, the feature cuts down on harsh blue light. Here’s how to activate it.

Which Kindle e-readers support Warm Light?

Unfortunately, only select Kindle models support Warm Light.

Apart from the above two models, the feature isn’t currently available on other Kindle e-readers. Since the Warm Light feature requires a series of amber LEDs in addition to the white LEDs for the front light, it can’t be backported to older models with a software update.

How to activate Warm Light on Kindle

If you own a Kindle Paperwhite 11th Gen or Kindle Oasis (2019), you can enable the Warm Light feature in a few steps.

To enable Warm Light from the home screen, tap on the drop-down arrow. If you’re reading a book, tap anywhere in the top portion.
Below the Quick Actions toggles, you’ll see a slider for adjusting warmth.
Drag the warmth slider or tap on the Plus or Minus buttons to adjust the screen temperature.
The screen will turn yellowish or orangish depending on the intensity of warmth you’ve set.

You can also set an automatic or manual schedule for Warm Light. To enable it, bring down the Quick Actions panel and tap on the Schedule button next to the warmth slider. Select Automatic if you want to have Warm Light gradually change with sunset and sunrise. Or, use the manual mode to create a custom start and end time for warm light.

Prolonged exposure to blue light at night is shown to decrease the level of melatonin, a chemical that controls sleep and wake cycles. This could disrupt your sleep schedule and make it harder to fall asleep. If you like to read on your Kindle at bedtime, use the Warm Light feature to cut down on the hard blue light. If your Kindle doesn’t support the feature, you can use dark mode to reduce eye strain at night.
