Google Pixel 3a series gets a surprise June 2022 update without a new security patch

Google released the June 2022 security patch yesterday, along with a new Pixel feature Drop. Notably, the Pixel 3a and 3a XL were missing from the list. This was not surprising since these devices hit their “guaranteed security updates” deadline in May. The Pixel 3a series is also not a part of the QPR3 beta program, further confirming that it has effectively reached its end of life in terms of feature updates. Nonetheless, the phone duo did receive a new software build this month.

If you own a Pixel 3a or Pixel 3a XL, you should be receiving software version SP2A.220505.006 as an incremental OTA update sized about 10 MB. Both the unlocked and the Verizon models are eligible for the new build. This is a rather minor bump from May’s update (SP2A.220505.002), which suggests that the release is focused on bug fixes and not new features. The underlying Android security patch level of the build is still May 2022, too.

Google did something similar with the Pixel 3 series. While these devices received their last guaranteed update in October 2021, the company rolled out an intermediate bugfix update for them in January 2022 before seeding the sunset OTA in February. Apparently, the Pixel 3a lineup is getting a similar treatment, although its final update will land “by July 2022.” This will give Google more time to squash all the reported bugs and ensure a stable user experience. All major security exploits patched until that point on other Pixels are also expected to be merged in the final update.

The Pixel 3a and 3a XL debuted back in May 2019 and are powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 chipset. While old on the run, Google could have taken a cue from Samsung and provided these smartphones with quarterly/bi-annual security updates for a longer period, since they still offer respectable performance by today’s standards.

After the Pixel 3a series, the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL are next in line to reach the end of their software support in October 2022.

Likely 1080p Chromecast HD with Google TV spotted on FCC

The Chromecast with Google TV is one of the best Android streaming dongles on the market — quite impressive for a device that’s nearly two years at this stage. The next logical step for Google would be to follow up with a more powerful and capable version. But that’s apparently not happening anytime soon. Instead, Google seems to be readying a cheaper Chromecast.

We first learned about Google developing a watered-down version of the Chromecast with Google TV in January this year via an APK teardown. A report from Protocol followed shortly and revealed additional information about the device’s hardware and features. Now a Google-branded “Wireless Device” (G454V) has been spotted on FCC. While the filing doesn’t explicitly mention it being a streaming dongle or Chromecast device, the below diagram linked in the FCC document makes things quite clear.

A diagram showing a Google streaming device connected to a LCD monitor

The EUT (Equipment Under Test) in the diagram refers to the device in question and we can see it’s connected to the power socket via a USB power cable. We can also see there’s a remote controller.

The FCC documents also reveal that the device in question supports 1080p video streaming at 60Hz, which is in line with previous rumors and rules out the possibility of this being a Nest speaker. The listing also mentions dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4GHz and 5GHz) support and Bluetooth LE support.

As per previous reports, the Chromecast HD with Google TV will be powered by an Amlogic S805X2 CPU with Mali-G31 GPU. It could also support hardware decoding for the AV1 video codec, which is missing on the current Chromecast. The FCC appearance typically means the device is closer to launch; however, we have yet to hear anything about the device from Google yet.

Google recently expanded the existing 4K Chromecast with Google TV to 12 new markets, including Europe. It’s also coming to India and a few other Asian markets.

Everything new in iPadOS 16: Collaboration, Weather app, Stage Manager, and more!

Apple had its annual WWDC in Cupertino this year, and as expected it announced a lot of new features for one of the most popular selling tablet lines in the world. Three years ago, Apple split iPadOS from iOS in order to better focus on the larger form factor. Now, Apple has launched a number of new features for iPadOS 16 including a new Weather app, Stage Manager multitasking, and more.

Craig Federighi noted that Apple wants to “create a distinct experience that’s built on the best of iOS like security, mobility, and an intuitive touch-first interface with powerful capabilities from macOS like multitasking and trackpad support. Combined with features like Apple Pencil that are uniquely iPad. All of this comes together to deliver our most versatile device.” We’ve already gone hands-on with it, so here are all the new features built into iPadOS 16.

iPadOS 16 Release Date and Availability

Developers can start testing out the latest betas right away, as they were made available immediately following the event. If you are a registered developer, you can download the beta right now. Otherwise, public betas will roll out in July. Typically the final version of the software becomes available during Apple’s fall event. You can safely assume a September-October time frame.

It will be available for the following iPad devices:

  • iPad (5th – 9th generation)
  • iPad Air (3rd – 5th generation)
  • iPad Mini (4th and 5th generation)
  • iPad Pro (1st generation and up)

What’s new in iPadOS 16

iPadOS 16
iOS and macOS enhancements

Apple photo sharing showing multiple family member icons.

First and foremost, Apple pointed out that many of the same features that it introduced in iOS 16 and macOS Ventura are also coming to iPadOS 16. These include a shared photo library, shared tab groups, and passkeys in Safari. The shared photo library is an automatic library of photos shared between members of your family group that all family members have access to add, edit, or remove photos. Photos can be added automatically by date range or by identifying who is in the photos.

Additionally, iPadOS will get shared tab groups and passwordless sign-in. As previously reported, Microsoft, Google, and Apple are all working together to eliminate passwords where possible. Apple is fully embracing the concept in its newest versions of all its platforms.

Weather on iPad

Weather app on iPad running iPad OS 16 on gray background

Apple also introduced a brand new Weather app to the iPad. The new app will take full advantage of the large display and include animated backgrounds reflecting current weather conditions. Each module in the weather app can be tapped to provide additional data. Apple is also building WeatherKit APIs for developers to build Weather into their iPad apps.

Collaboration in iPadOS 16

A man's hand interacts with an iPad.

Collaboration is the real-time sharing of an original document so everyone can work on it at the same time. It’s rather like Google Docs, but what’s neat is that you can initiate a collaboration through Messages or FaceTime directly from the share sheet. Just select Collaborate and select the conversation to which you want to share. This works in both Messages and in FaceTime.

You can also share tab groups from Safari to the group. When you do, you’ll see icons of who is looking at what tab in real-time. Additionally, Apple is opening up APIs to allow third-party developers to utilize collaboration if they want.

Freeform

Freeform board on iPad

Apple gave us a sneak preview of a new collaboration app called Freeform. Freeform is a large, whiteboard-like collaborative space where a group can all work together using tools similar to those found in Notes with different bruises and sticky notes, photos, etc. It’s an infinite space in which you use touch to drag the interface around, and pinching to zoom in and out.

Metal 3 and other gaming enhancements

For the first time, iPadOS 16 is bringing Metal 3 APIs to the iPad. Apple is looking at iPads to be gaming machines with Metal 3 enabled hardware-accelerated 3D graphics. Additionally, Apple has a new API that allows larger asset packs to be downloaded in the background while you play the game.

With your Game Center account, you can find friends, track progress in various games, and view leaderboards for various games. While gaming on iOS has largely been the domain of phones, Apple is pushing to get more gamers onto the iPad and these moves are designed to do just that.

Desktop class apps and system-wide features

Craig Federighi stands in front of a presentation board.

Apple is rolling out a number of desktop-class apps and features system-wide on the iPad. It’s an extensive list, but some of the ones they featured included Undo/Redo across the system, availability view in Calendar, and the ability to find and merge cards in Contacts. You can also change file extensions and view folder sizes in the Files app.

Apple also rolled out a system-wide find and replace that works in-line. Apple added a document menu in Files, Pages, and Keynote that allows you to perform common actions. Finally, Apple added the ability to customize your toolbars in some apps which allows you to access your most-used tools.

Stage Manager and windowed apps on iPadOS 16

Stage manager is Apple’s new multitasking interface for macOS, and it’s here on iPadOS 16 as well. Basically, iPadOS 16 allows you to create workspaces with overlapping windows that can be moved and resized. Then Stage Manager will organize your apps into different groups and move them off to the side so you can interact with your main task front and center. It’s a quick way to move between tasks which will make your iPad that much better at multitasking. Craig Federighi called it the “foundation for a big leap forward in user experience. One that can change how our pro users get work done on iPad.”

Reference Color

Reference mode is only available on the 12.9-inch iPad Pro. Pro users need accurate colors in order to complete their work. According to Federighi, “Reference mode meets the color requirements in workflows like review and approve, color grading, and compositing. Where accurate colors and consistent image quality are critical. Standalone device or using sidecar.”

M1 enhancements

Finally, there are a number of improvements that are designed to take advantage of the M1 processor in higher-tier iPads. You can use display scaling to increase the density of pixels in the display and give you more room to work. You can also use virtual memory swap which means you can use iPad memory as virtual RAM for up to 16 GB of virtual memory for demanding apps.

Apple unveiled the worst laptop of 2022 at WWDC

At a jam-packed WWDC 2022 today, Apple unveiled the latest versions of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, alongside hotly-anticipated new Apple silicon and health features. Today’s keynote also saw the arrival of the exhaustively leaked M2-powered MacBook Air, which incorporates the controversial screen notch from the company’s line of 2021 MacBook Pros.

But that wasn’t the most egregious crime against portable computer design committed on-stage in Cupertino today. No, instead, we need to talk about this thing.

Apple Windows laptop render from WWDC 2022

This is the device Apple chose to represent a Windows laptop in demonstrating support for its new Passkeys feature on non-Apple hardware. It’s a design that provokes morbid curiosity for more than a few reasons, in part because it doesn’t appear to match any actual real-world PC notebook. (At least none that we’re aware of — shout out in the comments if it looks familiar to you.)

Instead, it’s a Frankenstein’s monster of laptop bits time-warped in from the late 2000s and assembled into an intentionally unattractive PC counterpart to Apple’s slick new MacBooks. Even if you assume this is a fairly small laptop, the screen borders are comically humongous in all directions. And that display is bolted to an absolute unit of a base sporting LEDs for charging, wireless connectivity, and HDD activity — presumably from the ancient mechanical drive lurking within. (I can hear the clicks just looking at this render.)

At least this cursed contraption has managed, somehow, to meet the official minimum hardware specifications of Windows 11, thus avoiding the dreaded “System requirements not met” watermark of shame on its desktop.

Nevertheless, Apple’s imaginary Windows laptop is a clunker of a machine that makes for a jarring comparison with Apple’s latest and greatest.

This is nothing new, though. Cupertino has a long history of concocting deliberately terrible-looking renders to showcase its services on rival platforms. Back in 2021, it demoed Facetime working cross-platform through this fever dream of an Android phone, featuring chonky bezels and, inexplicably, a screen cutout. It’s a level of ugliness that defies logic.

Apple-created render of an Android phone that doesn't exist

This handset combines the worst of recent Android design elements into something you might find in a carrier store’s bargain bin circa 2018.

And it turns out, the terrible Windows laptop shown at WWDC has reared its head in years past. In 2015, Apple used what appears to be the same fictional computer to show off Apple Music’s multiplatform chops, paired with a similarly unflattering hypothetical Android phone.

Hypothetical Android phone and Windows laptop in Apple-created render

As long as Apple makes its products and services compatible with Windows and Android, it’ll need to represent the hardware that belongs to those ecosystems. Naturally, it wants to do that in a way that makes them look distinctly unappealing alongside their iPhone or MacBook counterparts — there’s no sense in showcasing the very best your competition has to offer, after all.

But the extremes to which Apple often goes in making these products look aggressively unappealing are impressive to behold — and more than a little comical. Who knows what horrors will emerge at future launch events should the tech giant choose to grace Android or Windows with yet more Apple services.

macOS 13 Ventura: Everything coming in Apple’s next desktop OS

Apple’s WWDC show has officially kicked off, and the firm announced all of the big updates for its major operating systems. Among them are iOS 16, watchOS 9, and of course, macOS Ventura. Also known as macOS 13, Ventura packs all kinds of new features for Mac users like Stage Manager, Continuity Camera, and much more.

macOS Ventura release date and availability

As is typically the case after the WWDC keynote, developers can start testing out early previews of the software updates immediately. As long as you’re a registered developer, you can get the first developer preview right now. If not, you’ll have to wait until the public beta starts, which will be available in July.

If you’re not willing to be a beta tester, the answer is that macOS 13 Ventura is coming this fall. Typically, Apple releases its new iOS and watchOS updates the week after its iPhone launch in September. macOS tends to come a little bit later though, so you can tentatively assume it will be released in October. It will be a free update for supported Macs.

Those supported Macs include the following:

iMac 2017 and later
iMac Pro 2017
MacBook Air 2018 and later
MacBook Pro 2017 and later
Mac Pro 2019 and later
Mac Mini 2018 and later
MacBook 2017 and later

Being that all supported Macs have to be made in 2017 or later, there are a fair bit of PCs that aren’t supported anymore. With macOS Monterey, support went back to 2015.

What’s new in macOS Ventura

Collage of new features in macOS Ventura

Stage Manager

Stage Manager on macOS Ventura

Stage Manager is another way to organize the apps that you have open. It’s going to take all of your open apps and place them into groups on the side of the screen. So now, those will sit on your desktop, and you can easily use them to switch between apps.

Continuity Camera and FaceTime Handoff

Apple devices switching off FaceTime

macOS Ventura is going to let you switch between iOS, iPadOS, and macOS in FaceTime calls. So now, if you’re talking to someone on your Mac and you want to get up and show that person something in the other room, you can transfer your call to your iPhone. I think we’ve all wanted to handoff a FaceTime call at one point or another.

iPhone mounted to a Mac

That’s not all, because there’s a new feature called Continuity Camera, which will actually let you use your iPhone as a webcam. That’s right; you’ll be able to strap an iPhone to your Mac and use the camera for whatever it is you’re doing, giving you a significant boost in video quality, at least with most Macs.

That also means that Center Stage – which allows the camera to move the field of view to focus on you – will be available to all Macs, using the phone you probably already have. Indeed, it’s not just about camera quality. It also adds portrait mode and studio light, and there’s a Desk View feature that works like an overhead camera.

Freeform is a new whiteboarding app

Freeform is a new collaboration app that Apple is making, aiming at a new take on whiteboarding. You can add text, files, links, photos, and so on. And naturally, you can collaborate in real time with this.

Mail improvements

Mail improvements in macOS Ventura

As usual, Mail is getting a bunch of new features. There’s better search functionality, which gives you better results and will give you suggestions as you type. You can also now unsend an email, schedule messages to be sent, and get reminders to return to a draft. It’s also going to notice when you’ve forgotten to include an attachment. A lot of these features seem to be inspired by Gmail.

Spotlight improvements

Spotlight search in macOS Ventura

Spotlight is getting a bunch of improvements. If you search for images, you’ll find pictures from Photos, Messages, Notes, the web, and more, and you can use Live Text to search for text inside of the image.

You’ll also find new quick actions in spotlight. You’ll be able to search and quickly start a timer, create an alarm, find the name of a song in Shazam, and more.

Safari improvements

As usual, Safari is getting some improvements. Passkeys are a feature that lets you sign into services and they’re end-to-end encrypted, making them way more secure. Moreover, Apple says they work on non-Apple devices.

You’re going to be able to share tab groups from Safari, and you’ll even be able to start a FaceTime call to collaborate on something. The people that you’re collaborating with will be able to add their own tabs to the group as well.

Messages improvements

It’s official; iMessages are getting an edit buttong before Twitter does. Yes, you’ll be able to change a message after you send it, although of course, this doesn’t apply to those green SMS messages. You can also mark a message as unread, in case you don’t have time to respond at the moment and you don’t want to leave the sender on read.

Apple is also bringing SharePlay to Messages. This will let you chat about things while you’re watching something with friends. In fact, Apple seems to be gearing up Messages as the place where you can text friends while still doing things together. Adding onto the Freeform app and Safari features above, there’s a broader range of collaboration features you can use. If you have a shared project, there will be a button to chat in Messages or start a FaceTime call.

Photos improvements

Apple has announced iCloud Shared Photo Library, which is pretty self-explanatory. You can share photos with up to five people at a time, and while sharing photos isn’t new, the ability to edit them is. This is proper collaboration-style sharing, rather than just sending an album to someone and letting them download it. Obviously, edits sync instantly.

You can choose what’s in the album you’re sharing based on things like people in photos, so it’s intelligently figuring out who’s in the picture. And when you tell Photos what you want in the album, you’ll see more in the For Your Shared Library tab.

As mentioned above, the first developer preview is available now, so we’ll learn more about what’s in it in the coming months.
