Android Auto’s new USB diagnostics tool makes it easier to identify bad cables

Android Auto is Google’s smart driving app that mirrors useful apps and other features from your phone to your car’s head unit. It can do this both over a wired connection and wirelessly. If you’re using the wired connection and having issues with Android Auto, a faulty USB cable could be to blame.

Often times Android Auto issues stem from a faulty or bad quality USB cable, and Google is making it easier to identify such cables with a new diagnostics tool that’s built right into the Android Auto app.

The USB Startup Diagnostics tool is rolling out with the latest version of the Android Auto app. The tool appears in Android Auto’s settings page under “Connection help.” Basically, it checks if your USB cable is able to transfer data between your phone and the head unit and lets you know if there’s an issue.

Google’s support page for Android Auto mentions that you should use a high-quality USB cable that’s at least 3 feet long. It also says you shouldn’t use USB hubs or cable extensions.

As mentioned above, the USB diagnostics tool has started rolling out with Android Auto version 7.5.121104. To try it out, grab the update from the Play Store. Alternatively, you can sideload the latest APK from APKMirror.

In related news, Google’s working on a major redesign for Android Auto. The new UI, codenamed “Coolwalk,” will be the biggest UI overhaul for Android Auto since 2019 and is designed as such to reduce the number of times the user leaves the navigation mode. We have already seen the new design in leaked images. However, it hasn’t rolled out to users yet.

Android 12L Beta 3 released for the Lenovo Tab P12 Pro

Android 12L Beta 3 is now available for the Lenovo Tab P12 Pro. You may be wondering why the Lenovo tablet is getting the beta update while the stable update is already out for the Pixel phones. And the answer is that Lenovo has lagged behind Google’s Developer Preview and Beta program from the very start. For example, Android 12L Beta 2 was made available for the Lenovo Tab P12 Pro two weeks after Google released it for its Pixel phones. And it’s the same case with the third and final beta update, which is coming a month later to the tablet.

If you own a Lenovo Tab P12 Pro and want to try out the Android 12L Beta 3, you can head to the Lenovo developer website to download the latest firmware. The image weighs 1.7GB in size, and Lenovo mentions it includes February 2022 security patches. The flashing instructions are as follows:

  1. Download SW flashing packages and install & configure your PC environment by following the instruction inside the package.
  2. Download and unzip the 12L Beta 3 image on your local drive, and then flash your device following the corresponding instruction in SW flashing packages.

In terms of changes, Android 12L Beta 3 doesn’t bring a whole lot. It fixes some bugs, including the one related to the At A Glance widget, screen-off animation, and system launcher. But other than that, there’s nothing new in terms of new features.

Android 12L Beta 3 will be the last beta update for the Lenovo Tab P12 Pro. Lenovo hasn’t disclosed when the final public release is coming, but hopefully, it’s just around the corner.

Android 12L is primarily designed for large screen devices and brings several UI changes and optimizations to provide an improved software experience on foldables and tablets. Notable features include a two-column layout for the notification shade and lockscreen, Activity Embedding, improved multitasking experience, etc.

Xiaomi launches the Redmi 10 in India, but its not the same device available internationally

Xiaomi launched the budget-friendly Redmi 10 globally in August last year. But the company didn’t bring the device to the Indian market at the time. Instead, Indian buyers got the Redmi 10 Prime a month after the initial launch, which was essentially the same device with a bigger battery. Xiaomi has now launched the vanilla Redmi 10 in India, but it’s not the same device that has been on sale in international markets for the last few months. Instead, the Redmi 10 (India) is very likely a rebranded Redmi 10C that was just launched in Africa some days ago.

The Indian variant of the Xiaomi Redmi 10 is very likely a rebranded Redmi 10C, which Xiaomi launched in some markets earlier this month. It shares some design elements with the international Redmi 10 model, but it has a different camera island design and more powerful internals. Instead of a MediaTek Helio G88 SoC, the Indian variant of the Redmi 10 packs Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 680 chip. The chipset is coupled with up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

The Indian variant of the Redmi 10 packs a 6.71-inch HD+ LCD panel with a waterdrop-style notch and 60Hz refresh rate, a massive 6,000mAh battery with 18W charging support, a 50MP primary camera paired with a 2MP depth sensor, and a 5MP selfie shooter. The device also features a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a single 1.5W bottom-firing speaker. On the software front, the Redmi 10 runs MIUI 13 based on Android 11.

Pricing & Availability

The Redmi 10 will go on sale in India starting March 24. It will be available in three colors — Midnight Black, Pacific Blue, and Caribbean Green — through Xiaomi’s website, Mi Home stores, Flipkart, and other offline retail outlets. Xiaomi is offering the Redmi 10 in two RAM/storage configurations, which are priced as follows:

  • 4GB+64GB: ₹10,999 (~$145)
  • 6GB+128GB: ₹12,999 (~$171)

LG starts rolling out the first stable Android 12 update to the LG Velvet

Towards the end of last month, LG shared an update on its support website confirming that it would release the Android 12 update to the LG Velvet in Q1 2022. As promised, the company has now started rolling out the first stable Android 12 release for the device in its home market of South Korea.

According to a recent post on LG’s support website, the Android 12 update for the LG Velvet has started rolling out to some users in South Korea. At the moment, it isn’t clear if the update is available for all variants of the LG Velvet or not, but we expect to receive some clarification from the company when the update starts rolling out more widely.

LG Velvet’s Android 12 update brings all the new features Google introduced in Android 12. These include the Material You design changes, wallpaper-based theming, a new privacy dashboard, new widgets, and more. LG might have packed a couple of additional features in the release, but we can’t confirm that as of now. We’ll have to wait until the update starts rolling out in more regions to confirm if it includes any additional features.

For the unware, all variants of the LG Velvet launched with Android 10 out of the box. LG updated the devices to Android last year, and it has already confirmed that the devices will receive Android 13 as well. We’ll make sure to let you know as soon as the company releases more details about the upcoming updates.

It’s also worth noting that LG also plans to release security updates for the LG Wing, Q51, Q52, Q61, and Q92 in Q1 2022. However, the company is yet to share a definite release timeline for the same.

The first beta of Paranoid Android Sapphire is now available for the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro

The Paranoid Android team has just released the first beta build of Paranoid Android Sapphire ROM for the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro. An Alpha release of the Android 12-based ROM has been available for both phones for some time now. However, the new beta version promises a more stable software experience.

As announced by XDA Recognized Developer arter97, the Paranoid Android Sapphire Beta is now available for the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro. The new build incorporates several device-specific improvements, including revamped blobs, improved sleep mode, fingerprint scanner improvements, and a switch to arter97’s kernel. The Paranoid Android platform itself has received some notable features, too, such as Repainter integration, optimizations from ProtonAOSP, a burn-in protection feature for devices with OLED panels, the latest f2fs tools, and more.

There are still some know issues in the beta release. These include slow initialization of mobile data after reboot, Wi-Fi not working on a few reboots, and less than ideal pocket detection, which may accidentally wake up the device or trigger gestures.

Follow the thread linked below if you want to try out the Paranoid Android Sapphire Beta on your OnePlus 9/Pro. It contains the download link for the ROM and step-by-step flashing instructions. Although you can flash the beta build on your existing Sapphire Alpha installation, the developer notes that “a clean flash is highly recommended.”

Samsung starts rolling out One UI 4.1 to the Galaxy S21 series

Samsung debuted the latest version of its Android skin, One UI 4.1, with the Galaxy S22 series earlier this year. The update recently started making its way to the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3, bringing a host of new software features to the foldables. Now, Samsung has started rolling it out to the Galaxy S21 series in some regions.

According to recent reports on our forums and Reddit, One UI 4.1 has started rolling out to the Galaxy S21 series in Canada. At the moment, the update is limited to the Canadian Snapdragon variants (SM-G99xW) of the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21 Plus, and Galaxy S21 Ultra, but it should make its way to more variants and regions over the next few days.

As you can see in the attached screenshot, One UI 4.1 for the Galaxy S21 series introduces several new features like Google Duo live integration, the Expert RAW app, Object Eraser, Quick Share, Grammarly integration in the Samsung keyboard, and more. The update also brings the Android security patches for March 2022 to the devices. If you haven’t received an OTA notification on your device yet, you can head over to the Software Update section in the device settings to manually check for the update. Alternatively, you can wait a few days for the update to automatically show up on your device.

Samsung plans to release One UI 4.1 to a host of other Galaxy smartphones and tablets over the next few months. These include the Galaxy S20 series, the Galaxy Z Fold 2, the original Galaxy Fold, Galaxy Z Flip and Z Flip 5G, Galaxy Tab S7 FE, Galaxy Note 20 series, Galaxy Note 10 series, and the Galaxy S10 series. Samsung is yet to provide a definite release timeline for these devices, though.
