Hands-on with the Honor Magic V: Honor’s first foldable phone

Honor unveiled the Honor Magic V at a Chinese launch event in January 2022, its first foray into the foldable smartphone market. It’s a Chinese exclusive with no international launch date in sight, but it packs high-end specifications in one folding package. It’s a similar form-factor to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, though slightly wider on the front-facing display. Specs-wise, it packs a 120Hz cover display, a 90Hz inner-display, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset powering the entire device.

We recently got some hands-on time with the Honor Magic V at this year’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona at the company’s launch event for the Honor Magic 4 series. While it still didn’t have Google apps (and thus, doesn’t point to an international launch event anytime soon), we got to play around with it for a little bit.

Honor Magic V: Design

Honor Magic V front Honor Magic V orange leather back

The Honor Magic V has a pretty similar look and feel to the Galaxy Z Flip 3, packing a 6.45-inch 120Hz FHD+ display on the front with a hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera. There’s a rectangular camera module on the back, surrounded by what feels like faux leather. When the device is unfolded, it reveals a massive 7.9-inch foldable OLED display with a 2272 x 1984 resolution and 90Hz peak refresh rate. There’s also a fingerprint sensor embedded in the power button on the right-hand side, meaning that it’s convenient to use when folded or unfolded.

Honor Magic V opened

Just like the OPPO Find N, the Magic V packs a waterdrop hinge that reduces creasing on the display. There was no visible crease unless you really looked for it, and even then, you’d forget about it very quickly. Honor also claims that this hinge design is the slimmest when compared to similar products in the market. Finally, there are no visible gaps between each side of the display when it’s folded shut. It’s also certainly one of the thinnest.

The bottom of the Honor Magic V

Honor Magic V hinge Honor Magic V hinge opened

Using it felt sturdy, and it felt comfortable to use. It’s also one of the biggest foldable phones out there — the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is a tad bit smaller in day-to-day usage. There’s not really much of a difference though, and if this one launches in the west, it’ll look more or less the same. There’s also the camera cut-out at the top right which impedes on the display if that’s something that might bother you. It feels like a bit of a weird placement.

Honor Magic V: Pricing & Availability

The unfolded Honor Magic V from behind

The Honor Magic V is a lot of fun to use, and it’s great to see the proliferation of foldable smartphones. It runs Android 12-based MagicUI 6, which still retains pretty much of its EMUI similarities. There weren’t really any folding-phone-specific software features that I could spot on this particular unit, aside from it being much easier to hop into multi-window mode from within apps. Even still, that’s more of  a typical Android feature that just becomes more useful on a larger display.

The Honor Magic V is currently available for purchase in China as of January 18, and it’s priced as follows:

  • 12GB+256GB: CNY 9,999 (~$1,570)
  • 12GB+512GB: CNY 10,999 (~$1,725)

It’s not slated for an international release currently, but we’ll be sure to let you know as soon as we learn more about it.

Leaked renders showcase the upcoming Xiaomi Watch S1 Active

At the Xiaomi 12 series launch event in China late last year, Xiaomi also launched the Xiaomi Watch S1 — a premium smartwatch featuring a 1.43-inch AMOLED display, up to 117 workout modes, continuous heart rate monitoring, an SpO2 sensor, up to 12 days of battery life, a built-in app store, and more. The company is reportedly gearing up to launch a new variant of the Watch S1, called the Xiaomi Watch S1 Active, and leaked renders of the smartwatch have now surfaced online.

The Xiaomi Watch S1 Active will feature a more rugged design compared to its predecessor, according to the renders shared by 91mobiles. The smartwatch looks to have a metal case with a circular dial, silicone straps, and two hardware buttons on the right side. However, unlike the regular Watch S1 (which features tiny circular buttons), the buttons on the Xiaomi Watch S1 are a bit larger and resemble the ones found on Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4.

Leaked renders of the Xiaomi Watch S1 Active

The renders further reveal that the watch will have Home, Sport, Outdoor, and Active text engraved on the bezel. The text lines up with the hardware buttons on the right side, which leads us to believe that the watch could have two more buttons on the other side corresponding to the other modes. However, we can’t be sure of that at the moment, as the renders only showcase the watch from one angle.

In addition, the leak reveals that Xiaomi might launch the Watch S1 Active in three colorways — Black, Blue, and White — with matching bands. Interestingly, the black and blue variants of the watch feature a color-matching case, while the white variant has a silver case. All three models have a red accent on the button labeled Sport.

At the moment, we have no further details about the Xiaomi Watch S1. However, it’s safe to assume that it will offer all the features available on the regular Watch S1, along with a couple of extras. We’ll make sure to let you know as soon as we have more information about the smartwatch.

Download: MIUI Closed Beta for Xiaomi and Redmi devices [Update: March 3 PRE builds]

The latest version of Xiaomi’s custom Android skin – MIUI 12.5 – is finally here. The first incremental update over MIUI 12 has been unveiled at the Mi 11 launch event in China. Compared to MIUI 12, the stable version of which was released less than six months ago, MIUI 12.5 brings in a slew of improvements, visual overhauls, and a handful of new features. We have already extracted the new live wallpapers, and now we are presenting the downloading links of the first set of MIUI 12.5 beta firmware packages for a bunch of Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO devices.

It is worth mentioning that these closed beta builds are meant for the Chinese variants, as Xiaomi suspended the rollout of MIUI global beta last year. As a consequence, you have to flash these recovery ROMs using TWRP to bypass the MIUI beta account whitelisting. Do not expect Google Play Services or any pre-installed Google apps in them. Language options are likely limited to English and Chinese only, too.

The Best Xiaomi Phones to Buy

The beta MIUI 12.5 builds listed below are based on either Android 10 or Android 11, depending on the device. If you are looking for MIUI 12 stable releases, you can find those here.

While all of these download links are directly from Xiaomi, users are advised to proceed at their own risk. We warn you once again, this is not intended for the average consumer and is recommended only for users comfortable with flashing ROMs.

Miss notification LEDs? This new variant of the Honor 60 Pro has a unique solution

In December last year, Honor unveiled two new mid-range smartphones — the Honor 60 and Honor 60 Pro. Three months later, the company has now introduced a new variant of the Honor 60 Pro called Honor Code. It’s essentially the same phone hardware-wise but features a brand new design with an electrochromic glass back.

The Honor 60 Pro “Honor Code” stands out from the crowd with its unique design. The phone’s back incorporates electrochromic glass with big stylized letters (H, O, N, O, R) printed all over it. These letters glow in sync with the rhythm of the incoming call, alarms, reminders, and notifications. Honor says the back provides “millisecond-level response speed,” and you can customize the glowing effect and its speed to your liking from the device settings.

Honor 60 Pro in blue color Front of the Honor 60 Pro

Honor’s demonstration video shows how the letters on the back light up during incoming calls:

Honor is not the first company to use electrochromic glass on a smartphone. OnePlus and Vivo have previously demonstrated concept phones with color-changing backs featuring electrochromic glass.

The Honor 60 Pro “Honor Code” variant comes in a single 12GB/256GB memory option and costs CNY 3,999 (~$633). It’s available for pre-order in China starting today. There’s still no word on when the Honor 60 series will launch globally.

In terms of the hardware, the Honor 60 Pro features a 6.78-inch FHD+ OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and DCI-P3 wide color gamut support. The phone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G Plus SoC, paired with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. The phone features a triple camera setup on the back, consisting of a 108MP main camera, a 50MP ultra-wide shooter, and a 2MPdepth sensor. Over on the front, you get a 50MP selfie shooter.

The Honor 60 Pro packs a 4,800mAh battery with 66W fast charging support. On the software front, it runs Magic UI 5.0 based on Android 11. Other highlights include 5G support, an in-display fingerprint scanner, NFC, and Bluetooth 5.2.

GrapheneOS brings its privacy-conscious camera and PDF viewer apps to the Play Store

There is certainly no shortage of camera apps on the Google Play Store. If you’re been a part of the Android ecosystem for any length of time, you’ve probably tried out several different camera apps besides the OEM ones. While there may be many to choose from — including the community favorite Google Camera ports — the vast majority of these apps are closed source and they don’t necessarily put your privacy as a top priority. Now, the team behind the privacy-focused GrapheneOS project aims to fill the void by releasing their camera app to the Google Play Store.

Dubbed as Secure Camera, the GrapheneOS camera app takes merely 5MB space after installation. It utilizes Google’s CameraX Android library, hence the camera app can seamlessly utilize vendor extensions. For example, if Samsung ships a CameraX night mode extension in its phones, the GrapheneOS camera will be able to use it. On supported devices like the Google Pixel lineup, zooming via pinch to zoom or the zoom slider makes use of the wide-angle and telephoto sensors out of the box. The app also supports QR code and barcode scanning.

As mentioned earlier, privacy is a big focus of GrapheneOS, so let’s talk about that. Here’s a list of privacy features present in the Secure Camera app:

  • Camera permission is the only one that’s required.
  • Images and videos are stored using the MediaStore API, so media and storage permissions aren’t required.
  • The Microphone permission is needed for video recording, but it can be turned off when you don’t need to record audio.
  • Location permission is only needed if location tagging has been explicitly enabled beforehand.
  • EXIF metadata stripping for captured images is turned on by default.

Additionally, the developers have also uploaded the GrapheneOS PDF viewer app to the Play Store. Aptly named as Secure PDF Viewer, it takes privacy to a whole new level. The foundation of the app is based on pdf.js and content providers. In order to minimize the security woes, the PDF stream is fed into the sandboxed WebView without giving it access to content or files. As a result, the app doesn’t require any permissions to operate.

We won’t see a time in which a custom ROM distribution will push all of their first-party applications to the Play Store, but it certainly makes sense for a lot of them. Using GrapheneOS’ action as an example, there just isn’t a reason for them to limit updates for the core inbox application packages to OTA updates. This results in it taking the developers longer to get bug fixes and new features out to their users and that can be a big deal if someone has been putting up with an annoying bug or security flaw within the apps.

If you’re interested in these GrapheneOS apps, you can download them from the Google Play Store by following the links embedded below. For any app developers that read this, they are open source, so you can take a look at the codebase, submit new patches, or just compile the apps yourself.
