Google disables Hold for Me and Call Screening for some Pixel 6 phones

Google’s Pixel phones don’t always have the most cutting-edge hardware on the market but they do pack some nifty software tricks that you won’t find on any other Android device. One such nifty feature is “Hold for Me,” which is quite handy when you call a business or customer care support and they put you on hold. In these scenarios, Hold for Me can wait for you and notify you when a human is back on the line ready to talk to you. It was introduced on the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G last year and is powered by Google’s Duplex technology. But it looks the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro won’t be able to use the feature for some time.

Google announced on Wednesday that it’s temporarily disabling the Hold For Me and Call Screening features on Pixel 6 devices due to a bug in the recently released update.

“In light of a bug in the December Android update, we are disabling Hold For Me and Call Screening on Pixel 6 devices running on the Android S December QPR release,” said a Googler in a recent post.

The issue only affects devices running the Android Build number SQ1D.211205.016.A4. To identify the build number, go to Settings > About phone > Build Number and check if the build starts with SQ1D.

If you haven’t received the December 2021 security update that started rolling out last week, you should continue to have access to Hold for Me and Call Screening features. Similarly, older Pixel phones aren’t affected as well. Google says our teams are working on resolving the issue and provide an update as soon as a fix is ready.

Originally a US-exclusive feature, Hold for Me was expanded to Canada in September this year.

Disney+ Hotstar tests new mobile-only plans in India

In a bid to attract more subscribers, Netflix recently reduced the pricing of all its plans in India. You can now get Netflix’s entry-level Basic plan for ₹199 per month (previously ₹499), while its mobile-only plan will set you back ₹149 per month (previously ₹199). To keep up with the competition, Disney+ Hotstar is now following suit and has reportedly started testing new mobile-only plans in the region.

According to recent reports from OnlyTech and TelecomTalk (via Gadgets360), Disney+ Hotstar has started testing two new mobile-only plans with a limited number of users in India. The entry-level mobile-only plan is priced at ₹99, but it’s currently available at a discounted price of ₹49. It is an ad-supported plan that gives you access to the complete Disney+ Hotstar library on one device with HD (720p) streaming support and stereo audio quality. The plan is reportedly available for select Android users and it’s limited to users who pay using a card, Paytm, PhonePe, or UPI.

The other mobile-only plan is priced at ₹299, but it’s currently available at a discounted price of ₹199. The plan gives you access to the Disney+ Hotstar library for six months, and it has the same limitations as the other mobile-only plan. At the moment, Disney+ Hotstar has shared no official information about these new mobile-only plans. But we expect the streaming service to share more information ahead of the wider rollout.

It’s worth noting that Disney+ Hotstar’s new mobile-only plans not only undercut similar offerings from Netflix but also offer higher resolution streaming support. As mentioned earlier, Disney+ Hotstar’s new ₹99 plan offers 720p streaming support, while Netflix only offers 480p streaming support on its ₹149 mobile-only plan. On the downside, Disney+ Hotstar’s new mobile-only plans are ad-supported, while Netflix doesn’t show ads on its mobile-only plans.

Here’s our first look at Garmin’s 2022 smartwatch lineup

Wearables manufacturer Garmin is reportedly readying its next-gen smartwatch lineup for an early 2022 launch. The company will unveil the new lineup at CES in January next year, and it will include four new smartwatches — the Garmin Epix Gen 2, the Fenix 7, the Instinct 2, and the Venu 2 Plus. While Garmin has now released any official information about the upcoming smartwatches, leaked renders showcasing their design have popped up online.

The leaked renders come from noted leaker Roland Quandt (via WinFuture), and they showcase all the new smartwatches in Garmin’s 2022 smartwatch lineup. The renders suggest that the upcoming Garmin Epix Gen 2 will sport a round watch face, unlike its predecessor, along with a bunch of new features like a SpO2 sensor, heart rate monitoring, and sleep tracking capabilities.

Renders of the Fenix 7 series reveal that it will include three models — the vanilla Fenix 7, the Fenix 7S, and the Fenix 7X. At least one of these models will feature the built-in solar panel found on the older Fenix 6. As far as the colorways are concerned, the Fenix 7 will likely come in a single black variant, while the Fenix 7S may come in an all-white colorway and a rose gold frame with an off-white band.

Furthermore, the renders showcase the Instinct 2, which will come in two models — the standard Instinct 2 and the Instinct 2S. These watches will feature the same rugged look as the original Garmin Instinct and feature an e-ink display to prolong battery life. The render of the standard Instinct 2 suggests that it may feature an integrated solar panel.

Finally, the renders also showcase the upcoming Venu 2 Plus, which will be a slightly upgraded version of the Venu 2. The renders reveal that the Venu 2 Plus will have an additional third button and it may come in black and white color variants.

TWRP adds support for the Xiaomi Mi 11 lineup, Mi Mix 4, and more

The TWRP custom recovery is an essential tool for power users and enthusiasts who want to install third-party software on their Android phones. With it, you can flash new custom ROMs, take full data backups, modify protected files, and do much more with your device. But in order to do any of this, you need to have a device that’s officially supported by the TWRP project. Thankfully, the team behind the project keeps adding support for devices ever so often. Xiaomi 12 series with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and MIUI 13 is launching next week

When Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 earlier this month, Xiaomi revealed that its next flagship Xiaomi 12 will be among the first to use the new chipset. At the time, the Chinese smartphone maker didn’t reveal when it was going to launch the new flagship lineup. But that changes today, as the company has now officially revealed the release date of the Xiaomi 12 series.

According to a poster shared by Xiaomi’s Weibo account, Xiaomi is set to unveil the new Xiaomi 12 lineup next week. The launch event will take place in Beijing, China on December 28 at 07:30 PM BJ time. At least two phones are confirmed, the Xiaomi 12 and Xiaomi 12 Pro, but rumors have it we might also see a third model called Xiaomi 12X. As confirmed by Xiaomi CEO Lei June, the Xiaomi 12 will launch with MIUI 13, the latest iteration of the company’s custom skin. We have known for a while now that Xiaomi has been internally testing MIUI 13 with Android 11 and Android 12 bases and it looks like the Xiaomi 12 will be the first to run the new software.

Xiaomi shared a teaser of the Xiaomi 12 series that gives up a glimpse at the design of both phones. As you can see in the image below, the Xiaomi 12 and Xiaomi 12 Pro will feature edge-to-edge displays with a centered hole punch and rounded edges.

According to previous leaks, the Xiaomi 12 could feature three 50MP cameras on the back, consisting of a 50MP main sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide sensor, and a 50MP telephoto lens with 5X optical zoom. Details about the display, battery size, charging speed and other hardware are unknown at this point.

In any case, with the official launch just a week away, we won’t have to wait long to find out more about the Xiaomi 12 and Xiaomi 12 Pro.
