Boost Mobile switches up mobile plans again, introduces $25/mo “Unlimited” option

Boost Mobile has been a popular Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) for years in the United States, first using Nextel’s network, then switching to Sprint in 2005. More recently in 2020, Boost was sold to Dish, as a concession to allow T-Mobile’s acquisition of Sprint to move forward. Boost has been updating its plans and service options since then, and now the company is switching up its offerings again.

Before now, Boost Mobile offered a 1GB data plan for $10/mo, 5GB data for $25/mo, 10GB for $35/mo, “Unlimited” data (slows down after 35GB) for $50/mo, and another “Unlimited Plus” option for $60/mo with more hotspot data. There were also various incentives (such as paying bills on time for several weeks) that dropped the prices slightly. Boost Mobile is now introducing new plans (via CNET) that drop in price if you pay for multiple months at a time — the same payment scheme that Mint Mobile and select other carriers have offered for a while.

The best deal of the bunch is the Unlimited plan, which only costs $25/mo if you pay for an entire year at once ($300 in total). That gives you unlimited talk and text, 30GB of hotspot data, and 35GB of high-speed data. Yes, just like most other carriers, “unlimited” doesn’t really mean unlimited. Still, most people don’t use that much cellular data in a single month. Below are all of Boost’s current plan options.

Google Chrome gets support for Android 12’s scrolling screenshots

Native scrolling screenshot support is undoubtedly one of the most useful new features in Android 12. It lets you easily capture a screenshot of content that’s scrollable by tapping the new “Capture more” button that extends the screenshot to show the whole screen. Although the feature works as intended on apps that use a standard View-based UI, it doesn’t work on apps that use a WebView or a heavily customized UI. As a result, you can’t capture a scrolling screenshot in apps like Google Chrome. However, that changes today.

According to 9to5Google, the new “Capture more” button for scrolling screenshots is now available widely in Chrome for Android on devices running Android 12 or Android 12L. As you can see in the attached screenshots, tapping on the button brings up a zoomed-out view of the entire webpage, letting you easily capture the exact amount of content you want.

To take a scrolling screenshot in Chrome for Android, press the power button and volume down button together as you would to take a regular screenshot. Tap on the new “Capture more” button next to the screenshot preview at the bottom. On the following page, select the amount of content you want to include in the screenshot and then press the “Save” button at the top. You can also edit or share the screenshot from the same page.

Scrolling screenshot support on Google Chrome for Android seems to be rolling out via a server-side update. It’s available on both my Pixel 4a and Pixel 3a running Android 12. 9to5Google notes that the feature is also available on devices running the new Android 12L beta release. If you don’t see the feature on your phone, we recommend installing the latest Google Chrome update (Chrome 96) from the Play Store.

WhatsApp’s Novi integration for payments is now live for some users in the US

WhatsApp has been working on Novi wallet integration for payments for a while now. We first got wind of the feature in an APK teardown of WhatsApp v2.21.22.6 beta, which included new strings suggesting that WhatsApp might soon require identity verification for payments. We spotted even more strings related to the Novi wallet integration in WhatsApp v2.21.23.10 beta, revealing that the messenger would let users link their Novi accounts to the service to transfer money internationally. WhatsApp has now officially kicked off a pilot program in the US, giving some users access to the Novi integration.

In a recent tweet, Novi’s head Stephane Kasriel announced that a limited number of WhatsApp users in the US will be able to send and receive money using Novi starting today. For the unaware, Novi is a digital wallet from WhatsApp’s parent company that uses digital currencies to simplify international money transfers. The service is currently available in the US and Guatemala for sending and receiving money using Pax Dollar (USDP) — a stable cryptocurrency backed one-to-one by the US dollar. However, the WhatsApp integration doesn’t seem to be available in Guatemala at the moment.

Kasriel further highlights that WhatsApp users who get access to the Novi integration during the pilot run will be able to send and receive money right from the chat screen without paying any fee. All payments made via Novi will appear directly in people’s chats. Novi’s website further reveals that users will not be subjected to any limits on how frequently they send money using the service and they won’t have to pay any fees to keep a balance or transfer money to their bank account.

If you’re one of the lucky few who have received access during the pilot run, you can start making payments by following these steps:

• Open a chat with a contact that you’d like to send money to
• Tap the attachments icon
• Select the “Payment” option in the pop-up menu
• Follow the on-screen instructions to log into your Novi account or create a new one
• Send/receive money on the following screen

A bizarre Microsoft Teams bug is preventing some Android users from making emergency calls

A rather bizarre bug is preventing some Android users in the US from calling emergency services. The issue was brought to attention after a Pixel 3 user found this bug in the middle of a medical emergency. Google says it’s aware of the issue and a fix is on the way.

The emergency calling bug was first discovered by Reddit user u/KitchenPicture5849 last week:

I had to call an ambulance for the grandmother on Friday as she appeared to be having a stroke. I got off a phone call with my mom, and proceeded to dial 911 just by typing and calling on my pixel. My phone got stuck immediately after one ring and I was unable to do anything other than click through apps with an emergency phone call running in the background.

Google has since confirmed the existence of the bug, stating that the company was able to “reproduce the issue under a limited set of circumstances.” The bug is a result of “unintended interaction between the Microsoft Teams app and the underlying Android operating system.” Specifically, it only affects users who have installed the Microsoft Teams app but haven’t signed in.

We determined that the issue was being caused by unintended interaction between the Microsoft Teams app and the underlying Android operating system. Because this issue impacts emergency calling, both Google and Microsoft are heavily prioritizing the issue.

Google says it’s working closely with Microsoft to resolve the issue. Microsoft will soon roll out a new update to the Microsoft Teams app. Meanwhile, Google will release a platform update to the Android ecosystem on January 4.

Apparently, if you have Microsoft Teams installed but haven’t signed in, you may be blocked from making an emergency call (!!) because of an “unintended interaction between the Microsoft Teams app and the underlying Android operating system.”

In the meantime, Google advises users running Android 10 and above to check if they have the Microsoft Teams app installed on their phone. If you’re already signed in, you’re not impacted. If not, uninstall and reinstall the app and sign in.

OPPO teases its first foldable smartphone, to be revealed on December 15

OPPO has long been rumored to be working on a foldable phone and today, the Chinese smartphone maker has officially confirmed its existence. The OPPO Find N is OPPO’s first foldable smartphone and ahead of its official reveal, the company has shared some details about the device.

In a blog post earlier today, OPPO Chief Officer Pete Lau revealed that the company has been working on its first foldable smartphone for four years now and is finally ready to reveal it next week.

This is our first foldable flagship smartphone – a result of four years of intense R&D and 6 generations of prototypes. This device is OPPO’s answer to the future of smartphones, and one that I’ve been truly excited about since taking on the role as chief product officer at OPPO, wrote Pete Lau, Chief Product Officer, OPPO.

OPPO is undoubtedly a bit late to the foldable party, as its rivals Samsung, Xiaomi and Huawei have already brought their foldable offerings to the market. Nonetheless, we’re excited to see OPPO’s vision for a foldable smartphone and how it will try to differentiate itself from the competition.

The teaser shared by the company shows the OPPO Find N packing what appears to be a triple rear camera setup on the back. We can also see the tagline “Designed For Find.” The company didn’t share any technical details of the phone.

Lau teased that the OPPO Find N will not have a visible crease in the display and that the company was able to solve durability concerns “by inventing perhaps the best hinge and display designs available today.”

We won’t have to wait for too long to learn more about OPPO’s first foldable. The company says it will share more details about the OPPO Find N on December 15, the second day of OPPO INNO DAY, the company’s annual tech event.

Besides the foldable phone, OPPO will also be revealing its self-made retractable camera solution at the event.
