macOS 12.1 RC enables SharePlay and fixes major bugs, Universal Control still missing

Apple has seeded the Release Candidate (RC) of macOS 12.1, along with that of iOS 15.2. This macOS release doesn’t bring plenty of notable features. However, it fixes some of the major bugs Mac users have been complaining about, in addition to bringing SharePlay support. Apple enabled SharePlay on iOS back in late October, and now macOS users will finally get to enjoy consuming media with their favorite people. It’s worth mentioning that Universal Control is still missing from this build. Apple’s website states that it’s coming this Fall, but it’s yet to be seen whether they push it till next year.

The Cupertino giant seeding macOS 12.1 RC points at an imminent public release. Mac users globally could receive this stable update as soon as next week. This will enable them to use SharePlay with others, in addition to getting a smoother experience, thanks to the included bug fixes. The patches in this build resolve an issue that was affecting Macs with trackpads. Taps and clicks in some cases were unresponsive. It additionally fixes a bug that was causing new MacBook Pro 2021 models to panic when viewing HDR YouTube videos. The full changelog of this release can be found below:

macOS 12.1 RC Changelog

macOS Monterey 12.1 adds SharePlay, an entirely new way to have shared experiences with family and friends in FaceTime. This update also includes the Apple Music Voice Plan, new safety features for children and parents in Messages, redesigned Memories in Photos, and other features and bug fixes for your Mac.

SharePlay

• SharePlay is a new way to share synchronized experiences in FaceTime with content from the Apple TV app, Apple Music, and other supported apps
• Shared controls give everyone the ability to pause, play, rewind or fast forward
• Smart volume automatically lowers the audio of a movie, TV show or song when you or your friends speak
• Screen sharing lets everyone on a FaceTime call look at photos, browse the web, or help each other out

Apple Music Voice Plan

• Apple Music Voice Plan is a new subscription tier that gives you access to all songs, playlists, and stations in Apple Music using Siri
• Just Ask Siri suggests music based on your listening history and likes or dislikes
• Play it Again lets you access a list of your recently played music

Photos

• Memories has been redesigned with a new interactive interface, new animation and transition styles, and multiple image collages
• New Memory types include additional international holidays, child-focused memories, trends over time, and improved pet memories

Messages

• Communication safety setting gives parents the ability to enable warnings for children when they receive or send photos that contain nudity
• Safety warnings contain helpful resources for children when they receive photos that contain nudity

Siri and Search

• Expanded guidance in Siri, Spotlight and Safari Search to help children and parents stay safe online and get help with unsafe situations

Apple ID

• Digital Legacy allows you to designate people as Legacy Contacts so they can access your iCloud account and personal information in the event of your death

TV App

• Store tab lets you browse, buy, and rent movies and TV Shows all in one place

This release also includes the following enhancements for your Mac:

• Hide My Email is available in the Mail app for iCloud+ subscribers to create unique, random email addresses
• Stocks allows you to view the currency for a ticker and see year-to-date performance when viewing charts
• Reminders and Notes now allow you to delete or rename tags

This release also includes bug fixes for your Mac:

• Desktop and Screen Saver may appear blank after selecting photos from the Photos library
• Trackpad could become unresponsive to taps or clicks
• External displays may not charge some MacBook Pro and MacBook Air computers when connected using Thunderbolt or USB-C
• HDR video playback on YouTube.com could cause 2021 MacBook Pro computers to panic
• Menu bar extras may be obscured by the camera housing on 2021 MacBook Pro computers
• MagSafe may stop charging on 2021 16-inch MacBook Pro computers when lid is closed and system is shut down

Google Docs gets new customization options for Tables

While Google Docs is a great free alternative to Microsoft Word, a few of its features aren’t user-friendly. Google is taking cognizance of some of these issues and rolling out updates to address them. For instance, the company recently added a new way to quickly insert images, names, links, and more in Google Docs. Now, it’s adding another feature that makes customizing tables a whole lot simpler.

Google has added a few new ways to customize tables in Google Docs (via 9to5Google) that will make users who crunch a lot of data happy. If you often use tables on Google Docs, you will now be able to perform the following tasks, making working with tables a lot easier on the platform:

Pin a table header row to repeat on each page

When you add a table that you want to stretch across multiple pages, a header pinned to the top of the table indicating which column represents what can prove to be handy. With this new update, you will now be able to do just that at the beginning of every new page.

Designate that a row should not be split across pages

If you’ve ever had an issue with the elements of a row being extended to the next page, you can prevent that from happening with this update. Docs will provide more control over formatting the contents inside a row.

Quickly add and arrange columns and rows

If you have a table with multiple rows and columns that you need to reshuffle, you can now arrange them by just dragging and dropping them to a different location. You can interchange multiple rows and columns too by doing this.

Sorting tables to better organize data

If you have a table consisting of values that need to be sorted in a particular fashion, you will now be able to do that with just a click. You can sort lists in either ascending or descending order which makes it easier to visualize data.

A new sidebar to manage table properties

Google has added a new sidebar in Docs that will open up every time you want to edit the properties of a table. This is similar to the image editing sidebar that is already a part of Google Docs. The changes you make in the sidebar will be reflected on the tables in real-time.

This new update to Google Docs will roll out in a phased manner starting from today, 7 December 2021. Google says that it may take up to or even more than 15 days for all users to receive the update. These new features will be available for all Google Workspace users as well as G Suite Basic and Business customers.

The OnePlus 9 is a fantastic device on its own, featuring a Snapdragon 888 SOC, 6.55-inch 120Hz screen, and 8GB of RAM. If you don’t need the larger screen and the extra camera specs of the OnePlus 9 Pro, the base OnePlus 9 isn’t a bad option to save that extra $149.99. If you prefer more RAM, you can consider the OnePlus 8T 5G. It has a slightly older Snapdragon 865 SOC, but you get 12GB of RAM just like the 9 Pro.

Telegram 8.3 lets you restrict message forwarding, makes it easier to delete older chats

After rolling out Telegram 8.2 just last week, Telegram is back again with a brand new update for its messaging service. Telegram 8.3 is here and it includes several new enhancements such as Protected Content, the ability to easily delete old chat history, global themes, a new option to post anonymously in public groups and more.

To protect your content from being copied by others, Telegram 8.3 is adding a new option called “Restrict Saving Content,” which restricts users from forwarding messages and media to other groups. The tool also prevents screenshots and downloading of media. To enable content protection in your group or channel, go to the Group or Channel Info page > Group / Channel Type > Restrict Saving Content.

The latest update also makes it easier to delete past messages from any conversation. You can now delete messages from a specific day or date range in any one-on-one chat. To clear history in a specific chat, tap on the date bar that pops up as you scroll through the chat which will open up the calendar. From there, select a day or the date range and tap on the “Clear History for These Days” button.

Next up, Telegram 8.3 adds a new button that lets you quickly link a desktop device. There’s also a new option to automatically log out devices after a certain period of inactivity.

Another notable feature is the ability to post anonymously in public groups and channels. To use it, tap on the profile picture located in the left corner of the message bar and select the channel name. After that, messages you post in that group will appear with the name of the channel.

Last month, Telegram eight new themes for individual chats. Now the company is making these themes available for the entire app. Each theme features colorful gradient message bubbles, day and night mode, an animated background, and unique background patterns. You can tweak the look and feel of each theme to your liking.

Telegram 8.3 also adds a few iOS-exclusive features such as the Text Recognition feature that lets you quickly select, copy and search texts in photos; all text formatting options for media captions, and redesigned contact info pages for Contacts, Groups, and Channels.

Telegram 8.3 is rolling out on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

Google’s Year in Search 2021 shares a glimpse of what the world searched for this year

Although Google has axed YouTube Rewind, the company is going ahead with the rest of its end-of-year traditions. It has already shared Google Play’s Best of 2021 apps and games, YouTube Music Recap 2021, and some of its favorite Chrome extensions and Chrome OS apps for this year. Now, the company has finally shared the Google Search trends for 2021, highlighting what the world searched for this year.

Google’s Year in Search 2021 showcases all the popular search trends of the year and includes a short film about the most significant trends of the lot. You can discover all the big search trends this year by heading over to this page. It categorizes all the major search trends of 2021 in chronological order, and it also includes a couple of filters to let you narrow down trends based on topics like Culture, Economy, Entertainment, Environment, etc.

All of the search trends listed on Google’s Year in Search 2021 page include a short description, along with shortcuts to share the trend on several platforms. In addition, the page features a quiz with questions based on these trends. When you answer the quiz questions, Google also displays some additional information about the topic.

Furthermore, the top trending lists also let you browse through various search, news, sports, TV, and people trends globally and for each country.
