WhatsApp starts offering cashback to some users in India

To get more people into the habit of using WhatsApp Pay, the Facebook/Meta-owned company is rolling out a cashback feature to its instant messaging app. We first learned about WhatsApp’s plans to introduce cashback for UPI payments last month. The reward program wasn’t live at the time, but as per multiple user reports, WhatsApp is now offering cashback on UPI transactions.

As per WABetainfo, WhatsApp has started offering cash rewards to users for sending money using WhatsApp Pay. Cashback ranges from ₹1 to ₹51 and can be had up to five times on sending money to different contacts. And the best part is that there’s no minimum transaction requirement. You’ll be able to check your rewards from within the Payments section.

Get cashback up to five times when you send money to different contacts. No minimum amount required.

As WABetainfo notes, there’s no way to trigger the cashback rewards feature if your account isn’t included in WhatsApp’s promotional campaign. It’s unclear if the cashback feature is limited to WhatsApp beta users or available on the stable version as well. However, you can increase your odds by joining the WhatsApp beta program on the Google Play Store or WhatsApp beta for iOS on TestFlight. The feature hasn’t rolled out widely yet. It wasn’t available for me on the latest version of WhatsApp beta.

WhatsApp, of course, isn’t the first UPI payment service provider to offer cashback on transactions. Players like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm have long used this oldest trick in the book to attract more users to their respective platforms.

Despite WhatsApp’s strong presence in India, WhatsApp Pay remains a relatively unknown name in the Indian mobile payments scene. Data released in June 2021 showed that WhatsApp only processed 0.47 million UPI transactions, accounting for just 0.02% market share.

Xiaomi doesn’t plan to restock its Mi 11 Ultra flagship in India, to bring new flagships next year

The Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra is Xiaomi’s answer to every “Ultra” phone released in the past year. It’s an insanely overkill device in all the right ways, and my colleague Adam also agrees on the same in his Mi 11 Ultra review. Xiaomi brought the device to India a few months after global launch, bringing the heat to other key flagships in the country like the OnePlus 9 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. But after being out of stock for a while, Xiaomi has confirmed that there are no more restocks planned for the Mi 11 Ultra.

Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra Review: The best hardware in a Xiaomi phone yet

According to a report by India Today, Xiaomi does not plan to import more units of this flagship to India, so the phone is unlikely to be available for purchase again on channels where it is out of stock. Xiaomi still plans to retain its focus on the premium category and will be launching new flagships in India in 2022.

The Mi 11 Ultra was launched in China in March 2021, and was announced for India in April. But the phone wasn’t available for sale in the country until July, likely due to the logistical challenges and COVID-19 restrictions in the country at that time. Unlike the vast majority of Xiaomi India’s lineup, the Mi 11 Ultra is not assembled in the country and needs to be imported from China. Xiaomi presumably sold through the initial batch of imported units in the first month of the sale itself, and we know that the device has remained out-of-stock on online channels for many months now (which even forced us to shift it around in our recommendations of the best Android phones in India as you couldn’t actually buy the device if you wanted to).

The Mi 11 Ultra was the most ambitious smartphone that Xiaomi launched in India, targeting price ranges dominated by Apple, Samsung, and OnePlus too. This report essentially confirms that no further restocks are planned for this flagship, which when read through the context of a great launch reception and quick sales, indicates that the company may have achieved its targets for the flagship for this region.

We reached out to the company for a statement, and Xiaomi India confirmed that restocks are not planned for the Mi 11 Ultra. The device remains listed on the Mi India website as the company continues to provide support and warranty to existing Mi 11 Ultra users in India, but will not be featured on purchase banners as you can’t actually buy the device online anymore. If you’re interested in buying the device, you may be able to locate stock in offline stores if you are lucky. But for online and channels that have already sold out, you can stop holding your breath on new stocks, and wait for new flagships in the next few months.

Royole FlexPai 3 leaked render shows a new design and a pop-selfie camera

When we talk about foldables, the Galaxy Z Fold and Mate X are two names that first come to mind. However, it wasn’t Samsung or Huawei who brought the first foldable phone to the market. That honor goes to a lesser-known Chinese brand called Royole, who became the first brand to unveil a commercially-available foldable phone back in 2018. Royole followed up with a successor last year in the FlexPai 2, which brought numerous improvements over the first model. Now the Chinese company is reportedly gearing up to launch the third model in the lineup, and a fresh leak gives us a closer look at what the brand has in store for us.

The Royole FlexPai 2 is a huge improvement but is it enough?

Notable leaker Evan Blass (@evleaks) has shared a leaked render of the upcoming FlexPai 3, giving us a detailed look at the phone’s overall design. As you can see in the image attached below, the FlexPai 3 looks radically different from its predecessor. It ditches the vertical camera module located on the front right bezel in favor of a more traditional rear-mounted camera module.

Royole FlexPai 3 shown from front, rear and side

While the previous models didn’t feature a dedicated selfie camera and repurposed the main camera system for video calling and selfie duties, the new model will seemingly feature a pop-up selfie camera. We also notice that the phone only has two rear cameras, a step down from four cameras on the previous model. Elsewhere, we see a square camera cutout on the opposite side of the rear camera module. We deduce that it’ll help prevent the camera module from being scratched when the phone is folded outwards.

The Royole FlexPai 3 was recently spotted on TENAA, revealing some of its key specifications. As per the TENAA listing, the phone will feature a 7.2-inch screen (when unfolded) and a 3,360mAh battery.

There’s no word on when the FlexPie 3 will officially launch. Like its predecessor, it will probably be limited to the Chinese market.

[Update: Rolling out to older Pixel phones] Google Translate’s Material You redesign debut on the Pixel 6 series

Update 1 (11/01/2021 @ 10:55 ET): Google Translate’s Material You redesign has started rolling out to older Pixel phones. Scroll to the bottom for more information. The article as published on October 28, 2021, is preserved below.

Google officially unveiled the Pixel 6 series last week. The new Pixels bring numerous improvements to the table, including a fresh design, new camera hardware, an in-house SoC, and the latest version of Android. Besides the updated hardware, the new Google phones also debut numerous exclusive software features. One more thing that appears to be exclusive to the Pixel 6 series is the Material You design for the Google Translate app.

Google Pixel 6 Pro Review: Fantastic everyday phone with an undeniable Exynos inspiration

9to5Google reports that the Google Translate app on the Pixel 6 has received a new update which brings the much-awaited Material You redesign. However, the redesign seems to be exclusive to the Pixel 6 series, at least for now. It’s unclear when Google plans to expand the redesign to other smartphones, including the older Pixel phones.

You can check out the new avatar of the Google Translate in the screenshots attached below:

As you can see, the hamburger menu is gone, and the buttons are rounded and bubbly. Controls for switching languages have also become bigger. Buttons for camera and voice and an option to enable interpreter mode have been relocated to the bottom, making them easier to reach with one hand. And yes, the UI elements also support Android 12’s wallpaper-based dynamic theming.

We have known since last month that Google has been working on a major redesign for the Google Translate app. We first learned about the UI overhaul through a teardown of the Google Translate app in September. We had also spotted hints within the code that the redesign might be exclusive to the Pixel 6 series, and it looks like that’s turned out to be the case.

The redesigned Google Translate app has started rolling out on the Google Play Store, and if you own a Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro, you can try it out right now. If the update isn’t live for you, you can also sideload the APK from APKMirror.

Update 1: Rolling out to older Pixel phones

As per multiple user reports on Reddit, the Material You redesign for the Google Translate app has now started making its way to previous Pixel phones. So far, the update has rolled out to the Pixel 5, Pixel 4, Pixel 4, and Pixel 3a units. The update is rolling out via the Google Play Store with Google Translate version 6.25.
