Samsung Internet 14.0 beta rolls out with improved privacy features, UI changes, and more

The Samsung Internet browser has received a bunch of new features over the last few months. In the last two updates alone, Samsung has rolled out additional privacy and security features, a new high contrast mode, an expandable app bar, an immersive mode for watching videos, redirect protection, URL quick access, and much more. Now, the company is rolling out another update for the browser on the beta channel, which brings additional privacy and security features, a few UI changes, and other minor improvements.

Samsung Internet 14.0 beta introduces a new Smart anti-tracking feature that detects when a website is trying to track you and stops it automatically. It also brings a new security control panel, which lets you monitor your privacy settings easily. The new privacy control panel also shows some interesting daily stats, like the number of pop-ups and trackers blocked by the browser.

New privacy and security features

Along with the new privacy and security features, Samsung Internet 14.0 beta comes with support for Flex mode on Samsung’s foldable smartphones. Thanks to this, you will now be able to watch a video on the top half of the screen and access all the video controls on the bottom half. This feature will turn on automatically whenever you play a video in full screen on a Galaxy Fold or Galaxy Z Fold 2.

App Pair support

Furthermore, Samsung Internet 14.0 beta brings support for Samsung’s App Pair feature, which will let you open two instances of the browser in split-screen mode. It also introduces support for custom fonts, S Pen handwriting recognition on the Galaxy Tab S7 series, improvements for the Reader mode, and a new Translation extension.

If you’re a part of Samsung Internet’s beta program, you should be able to download the latest beta release from the Google Play Store or the Samsung Galaxy Store starting today. But if you’re on the stable channel, you’ll have to wait until April to receive all the aforementioned features with a stable update.

Samsung’s second Unpacked of 2021 is next week but leaks may have spoiled the surprise

Samsung has announced plans for another Unpacked event on March 17, 2021, which the company is calling “Galaxy Awesome.” The “awesome” part of the invitation might allude to a Galaxy A-series announcement, which means we might see the rumored Galaxy A52 and Galaxy A72 make their debut.

We’ve seen the unannounced Galaxy A52 and Galaxy A72 quite a bit over the last few weeks, with a recent report claiming both phones will come equipped with high refresh rate displays. If true, it’ll certainly add some intrigue to Samsung’s mid-range lineup, which we’re expecting to launch with affordable price tags.

In addition to recently leaked information, we also saw a hands-on video that revealed pretty much every detail about the Galaxy A52. The device is expected to feature a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display at Full HD+ resolution along with a 120Hz refresh rate. There’s also said to be an LTE version, which will sport a 90Hz display.

Other alleged Samsung Galaxy A52 specs include two configurations: 6GB + 128GB and 8GB + 256GB. The device is said to sport a 64MP primary, 12MP ultra-wide, 5MP depth, and 5MP macro sensors on the back and a 32MP camera on the front. The device is also rumored to come equipped with a 4,500mAh battery, 25W fast charge, an in-display fingerprint sensor, and launch with Android 11 out of the box.

The Samsung Galaxy A72, meanwhile, is expected to feature a 6.7-inch panel with a 90Hz refresh rate display. The device will reportedly pack a quad-camera on the back, comprised of a 64MP primary sensor, a 12MP wide-angle lens, an 8MP telephoto zoom lens, and a 2MP macro sensor. It will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G processor and pack 6GB or 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB storage with microSD card expansion support.

The Galaxy A72 may sport a 5,000mAh battery with fast charging support, and also feature IP67 rating for dust and water protection. Other specifications may include a 32MP selfie camera, a 3.5mm audio jack, and Android 11.

The Galaxy Awesome event will be available to stream on March 17 starting at 10 a.m. ET.

The Sonos Roam is the company’s most portable smart speaker yet

After a last-minute leak, Sonos has announced a new speaker that’s affordable and portable. The Roam is small and light enough to fit into a purse or backpack, and advanced enough to seamlessly integrate with Sonos’s expansive lineup of home audio devices.

Shipping on April 20 for $169, the Sonos Roam measures in at 6.61 x 2.44 x 2.36 inches and weighs 0.95 pounds, making it much more portable than the Sonos Move, which was the company’s first stab at a battery-powered speaker. The size and price means the Sonos Roam can easily be transported around town, whether you’re having a picnic at the park or sunbathing at the beach.

Like other Sonos products, the Roam supports a simultaneous connection to Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and can easily connect to your existing Sonos setup. The company said the Roam can intelligently connect to your home setup through WiFi and then automatically re-pair with your mobile phone via Bluetooth. The speaker also supports a new feature called Sound Swap, which will switch the music to the nearest speaker in your system.

The Sonos Roam works with the Sonos app and supports more than 100 streaming services, including Sonos Radio. The portable speaker also supports Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple’s AirPlay 2. In addition, the Roam supports Sonos’s Automatic Trueplay feature over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, meaning the speaker will always tune itself no matter what environment it’s in.

Sonos claims the Roam will get up to 10 hours of continuous playback on a single charge, and up to 10 days of battery life when not in use. Similar to the Move, the Roam can be placed on a magnetic wireless charger, which Sonos is selling separately for $49. The company said the portable speaker is dust and water resistant, with an IP67 rating. That means you can take the device to the pool.

The Roam comes in both black and white and is available for pre-order now.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro, Redmi K40 Pro, Motorola Edge S, and OnePlus Nord Android 11 kernel sources are now available

The GNU General Public License version 2 (GPLv2) mandates every Android device manufacturer to publicly release the part of Linux kernel code that they have shipped on their devices. An ideal kernel source release should be accompanied by appropriate commit history, and all the dependencies are expected to be properly documented. While we don’t expect every company to maintain such a high standard, there are a few OEMs who regularly publish the source code for all the software revisions they roll out. We are happy to report that a couple of new devices now have had their kernel sources released, namely the Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro and the Redmi K40 Pro. Motorola has also updated its official GitHub repository with the kernel source code release for the Motorola Edge S and several other smartphones. The OnePlus Nord grabbed our attention as well, for which OnePlus has published kernel sources corresponding to the phone’s stable Android 11 update.

Xiaomi recently launched a bunch of phones under the Redmi Note 10 series. Among them, the top-of-the-line Redmi Note 10 Pro (India/Global) and the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max feature a massive 6.67-inch AMOLED DotDisplay with a refresh rate of 120Hz. Both devices come running Android 11 with MIUI 12 on top. And now the company has released the kernel source code for both phones, allowing the modding community to kickstart aftermarket development. You can review the code at Xiaomi’s GitHub repository by clicking on the link below.

Alongside this, Xiaomi has also released kernel sources for the Redmi K40 Pro and Redmi K40 Pro+ a few days ago. These phones will very likely debut internationally in the near future under the POCO F3 and the Mi 11X/11i monikers.

Redmi K40 Pro/K40 Pro+ Kernel Sources

Apart from Xiaomi, OnePlus devices also have a thriving modding community, largely made possible by apt kernel source drops from the company. Continuing the tradition, the OnePlus Nord has now received an updated kernel source for its stable Android 11/OxygenOS 11 build, which was released as an OTA update just a couple of days back.

In recent days, Motorola too has refreshed its official GitHub repo and uploaded kernel sources for the Motorola Edge S, 2021’s Moto G Power/Moto G Stylus, and several other devices. Check out the index below to take a look at the releases:

Sr. No. Device, Device Codename, and XDA Forum Link Kernel Source and corresponding Android version Previous Release

6. Moto G 5G / Motorola One 5G Ace (kiev) Android 10
7. Moto G 5G Plus / Motorola One 5G (nairo) Android 10

Kernel sources make more stable custom kernels and AOSP ROMs possible. If you’re a developer who has looked forward to this release for a while, check it out at the repositories linked above. As for users, keep an eye out on the forums for exciting projects that will surely arise for your device.

Download: MIUI 12.5 Closed Beta for Xiaomi and Redmi devices [Update: March 8 builds]

The latest version of Xiaomi’s custom Android skin – MIUI 12.5 – is finally here. The first incremental update over MIUI 12 has been unveiled at the Mi 11 launch event in China. Compared to MIUI 12, the stable version of which was released less than six months ago, MIUI 12.5 brings in a slew of improvements, visual overhauls, and a handful of new features. We have already extracted the new live wallpapers, and now we are presenting the downloading links of the first set of MIUI 12.5 beta firmware packages for a bunch of Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO devices.

It is worth mentioning that these closed beta builds are meant for the Chinese variants, as Xiaomi suspended the rollout of MIUI global beta last year. As a consequence, you have to flash these recovery ROMs using TWRP to bypass the MIUI beta account whitelisting. Do not expect Google Play Services or any pre-installed Google apps in them. Language options are likely limited to English and Chinese only, too. Xiaomi has yet to launch MIUI 12.5 globally. Meanwhile, you can try out the closed betas from China.

The beta MIUI 12.5 builds listed below are based on either Android 10 or Android 11, depending on the device. If you are looking for MIUI 12 stable releases, you can find those here.

Download: MIUI 12.5

You can download the latest beta of MIUI 12.5 for your device from the links below. You can also visit our linked forums in case you need further assistance. While all of these download links are directly from Xiaomi, users are advised to proceed at their own risk. We warn you once again, this is not intended for the average consumer and is recommended only for users comfortable with flashing ROMs.
