Xiaomi’s Mi 11 Pro flagship could bring major display enhancements

Qualcomm is scheduled to host the Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit early next month. During the event, the chipmaker is expected to unveil its next flagship SoC — the Snapdragon 875. Much like last year, we also expect some smartphone OEMs to announce their next-gen flagships at the event. Last year, Xiaomi was one of the few OEMs that announced its Snapdragon 865-powered flagship Mi 10 series during the tech summit. This time around, we’re expecting the Chinese smartphone maker to talk about the Mi 11 series. While Xiaomi is yet to reveal any details about its upcoming flagships, recent leaks suggest that the Mi 11 Pro could include major display enhancements.

Digital Chat Station, a leaker on Weibo with a good track record, suggests that the Xiaomi Mi 11 Pro will feature a QHD+ resolution panel at up to 120Hz refresh rate. Although this wouldn’t make it the first Android phone with a QHD+ panel and 120Hz refresh rate (OPPO Find X2 Pro and OnePlus 8 Pro already offer QHD+ 120Hz panels), it would be a big leap for Xiaomi as the Mi 10 Pro had an FHD+ panel with a 90Hz refresh rate.

Along with the high-resolution panel, Xiaomi is expected to introduce some new display features with the Mi 11 Pro. XDA Senior Member kacskrz, another reliable Xiaomi tipster, recently spotted several new display features in the latest MIUI 12 beta code. These include MEMC, SDR-to-HDR upmapping, and AI upscaling.

Xiaomi has already implemented MEMC in several of its previous phones, including the Mi 10 Ultra and the Mi 10T Pro, but the company is yet to add SDR-to-HDR upmapping or AI upscaling to any of its devices. The company’s Mi Box 4K features SDR-to-HDR upmapping, so the tech isn’t new for the company. Furthermore, there are some other devices in the market that offer SDR-to-HDR upmapping, such as the OPPO Find X2 Pro and OnePlus 8 Pro. As of now, it isn’t clear if Xiaomi will use self-developed display technology to offer these features or if they’ll license it from a company like Pixelworks. Regardless, it would be great to see such premium display tech reach more people with Xiaomi’s next flagships.

It’s official: Huawei has sold its Honor smartphone brand

Last week, a report claimed Huawei had finalized a buyer for Honor’s smartphone business. Today, Reuters is reporting that Huawei has agreed to sell Honor, a smartphone brand under the Huawei Consumer Business Group, to a consortium of over 30 agents and dealers. The buyers announced they’re setting up a new company called Shenzen Zhixin New Information Technology to complete the purchase.

Once the sale is complete, Huawei will no longer hold any share in the new Honor brand. The deal will include everything from R&D capabilities, supply chain management, and other Honor assets. Honor’s workforce includes over 7,000 employees.

A joint statement, shared by Chinese newspaper Shenzhen Special Zone Daily, on behalf of the more than 40 companies involved in the transaction said the sale is a “market-driven investment made to save Honor’s industry chain.” After the change of ownership, Honor will continue as usual, with no impact on production expected.

Ever since Huawei was placed on the U.S. Commerce Department’s “Entity List,” the company has found it difficult to operate its consumer hardware business. The company has adapted about as well as it could, but it’s increasingly facing tougher challenges due to increasing restrictions by the U.S. For instance, since the U.S. effectively blocked many chipmakers from supplying to Huawei, the company will be unable to have its ARM-based SoC designs fabricated by contract chipmakers like TSMC. As such, the Kirin 9000 found in the Huawei Mate 40 series is expected to be Huawei’s last self-designed high-end Kirin silicon, and the company will have to turn to 4G chipsets from competitors like Qualcomm or hope that China’s semiconductor manufacturing industry can step up.

If Huawei seeks to become fully independent from US-based companies, then it’ll need a lot of cash to make that happen. The deal to sell Honor could be the cash infusion that Huawei needs for this effort. No figure for the transaction was revealed, but a previous report claimed it was in the region of $15.2 billion. The previous report also claimed that the consortium’s goal after purchasing Honor would be to take the company public within three years.

With the sale now complete, Huawei will allegedly put its focus on continuing to make high-end smartphones and its corporate-oriented business. Honor, meanwhile, will continue to cater to the mid-range market across the globe.

Samsung is working on a secure file transfer app called “Private Share”

Samsung this year introduced a clever Quick Share feature that makes it simple to share files between the company’s smartphones and tablets. Now, the company is allegedly gearing up to introduce another file sharing feature known as Private Share.

According to SamMobile, the new feature will use the power of blockchain for a more secure file transfer experience. The concept will reportedly take inspiration from ephemeral messaging, with senders having control over when the sharing of a file will expire. Once sharing expires, that file will then be deleted from the recipient’s device.

The Private Share app will also prevent recipients from re-sharing and taking a screenshot of files. However, there’s nothing to stop a recipient from taking a picture of said information with another device. But if you’re sharing such private information with someone, one would hope you could trust that person not to go to such lengths.

SamMobile said Private Share will work similarly to Quick Share. Both the sender and the recipient will need to have the Private Share app, and once the sender sends a transfer request to the recipient, a private channel will be created after the request is accepted. The publication speculates that Private Share will be introduced as a headlining feature alongside the rumored Galaxy S21. It’s unclear, however, if Private Share will be exclusive to Samsung’s newest devices or if it’ll eventually roll out to other Samsung phones in the lineup.

This wouldn’t be Samsung’s first mobile foray into blockchain tech. The Galaxy S10 previously introduced a Blockchain Wallet to securely handle your cryptocurrencies. We may find out what Samsung is up to very soon, as reports suggest the company may introduce a new flagship device in early January 2021.

Here are the best Thunderbolt 3 laptops: Dell XPS 15, Apple MacBook Air and More

Data transfer speeds have grown exponentially in the past few years, be it mobile networks or your local storage media. Similarly, the good old USB has also become quite reliable when it comes to transferring large amounts of data over a wide bandwidth. Intel had announced Thunderbolt 4 earlier this year but it might take a while before we can see devices adopting the new connectivity protocol. So today, we are checking out some of the best Thunderbolt 3 equipped laptops.

Thunderbolt 3 makes use of the USB Type-C connector to offer up to 40Gbps data transfer speeds. This makes it twice as fast when compared to the latest USB 3.2 standard. Hence, Thunderbolt 3 is an excellent option for photographers, video editors, and other creative professionals, who need to frequently transfer large files. Additionally, Thunderbolt 3 can be used to connect DisplayPort-compatible devices including external 4K monitors.  The protocol can also be used to connect PCI Express (PCIe) peripherals including external graphics cards enabling you to play games or accomplish graphics-intensive tasks on even notebooks. Since it uses a standard USB port, one can also make use of various peripherals, hard drives, as well as power delivery. In case you missed it, here is also a list of the best laptops that you can buy in 2020.

Apple MacBook Pro 16

apple macbook pro 16

Apple has been one of the early adopters of the Thunderbolt standard. The MacBook Pro 16 offers a total of four Thunderbolt 3 ports. Apart from the 40Gbps bandwidth for Thunderbolt devices, each port brings support for charging, DisplayPort, and USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10 Gbps). Now, this is also the biggest and most powerful MacBook in years and an easy recommendation for power users, especially if you are a creative professional. The notebook can be configured with an 8-core Intel Core i9 processor, up to 16GB of 2666MHz DDR4 RAM which is further expandable, and up to 8TB of SSD storage. You also get a gorgeous 3072 x 1920 resolution Retina display and AMD Radeon Pro graphics. Do note that this might be one of the last MacBooks to support external graphics via the Thunderbolt ports as the next refresh might include the M1 chip that was introduced with the new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro 13, and Mac mini.

The MacBook Pro 16 is the most powerful notebook from Apple and offers a total of four Thunderbolt 3 ports.

Dell XPS 15

The XPS 15 is an excellent Windows machine for someone who wants a premium, top of the line design as well as performance. This one comes with two Thunderbolt 3 ports with power delivery and DisplayPort support. There is a third USB Type-C port as well with the same power delivery and DisplayPort options. While the machine comes with 4GB discrete graphics, you can make use of the Thunderbolt port to plug in an external graphics card as well. Other than that you get this notebook with up to a 10th-gen Intel Core i9 processor with 32GB of RAM and 1TB NVMe SSD.

Today only, save on Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements at Woot!

Adobe products can be really expensive. Whether you decide to subscribe to their Creative Cloud service or buy the applications outright, it can really take a chunk out of your wallet. There are definitely ways to save on the applications, but reseller sites can be a dice roll, and sometimes you end up with a bad code and no way to get a refund. But, today only at Woot!, you can save money stress-free on Adobe Photoshop Elements and Adobe Premiere Elements.

With this sale, you have three choices–Adobe Photoshop Elements 2020 by itself, Adobe Premiere Elements 2020 by itself, or a bundle of both of them together. Individual applications will cost $50 apiece, while the bundle is $75. That’s half off their MSRPs! Also, if you have Amazon Prime (which you still might if you signed up for the free 30 days for Prime Day), you’ll get free shipping for this item.

That’s the catch for this Woot! deal, though–these are discs, not just product codes. So, your computer needs a disc drive in order to run the installer. I know I run with a smaller PC build than most, so I decided against a DVD-ROM drive in order to save space. If you have a disc drive built-in or have an external DVD-ROM reader (which can be very helpful), then you’re good to go! In fact, you can buy the application of your choice and an external reader just for the disc and still save!

But, as is usually the case with Woot!, this deal only lasts until the end of the day, or until they sell out. Make sure to grab this quickly if you’re interested!

Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements 2020
Today only, save 50% on Adobe products! You can get Photoshop Elements 2020, Premiere Elements 2020, or both. Grab what you want before it's gone!

If you’re interested in an external DVD-ROM drive, there is one on Amazon that’s just a little over $20 with good reviews, too:

    Amicool External DVD Drive
Did you get rid of your DVD drive in your PC setup? Most people have, but sometimes you need a drive for applications and older installations. This DVD-ROM reader is reliable and cheap, so you can make sure to have a disc reader when you need it.
