YouTube Premium members in the US, UK, and soon Canada and Europe can claim a free Stadia Premiere Edition bundle

Youtube Premium is the latest Google service to lavish its users with freebies, this time in the form of a Stadia Premiere Edition for absolutely gratis. Subscribers to the service, including those who have it as part of their YouTube Music plan, can claim a voucher in the app, offering a package including controller and Chromecast Ultra, which remains the only version that Stadia supports officially. Your only commitment is that after the first month, you’ll need to pay the $12 subscription fee, but there’s no contract or commitment to do so (though it seems a bit dumb, as you won’t be able to access large parts of the service). Alternatively, you could put the controller in the cupboard and keep the Chromecast Ultra, which despite dating back to 2016, remains a handsome streaming device.

On the face of it, a free Stadia package seems like a jolly perk, but it does raise the question of how the fledgling cloud gaming service is doing – $100 is a fairly generous gift for a service that has succeeded in selling itself. We’ll be interested to see if this fairly audacious seeding program will do anything to improve Stadia’s foothold against rival services like Amazon Luna and Nvidia Geforce Now. That said, a good start would be making Stadia work with Google Chromecast with Google TV, which is not due to happen until next year, though there are several workarounds in our forums.

Google perks are nothing new but seem to be particularly prevalent right now, with Google One and Chromebooks amongst the Google products currently offering up a bit of something for nothing. So far, based on the information gathered by GemStadia on Twitter, we’ve confirmed that the Stadia offer is available in the UK and USA with Canada and mainland Europe expected to be added in the coming days. The offer is due to run until the end of 2021. To access it, go to the YouTube Premium app, go into your account settings, click “Your Premium Benefits” and follow the instructions. If your experience matches ours, you should find your Stadia Premiere Edition lands on your doorstep the very next day.

Several Xbox Series X users are reporting a variety of hardware issues, including smoky consoles

After two months of waiting, Xbox fans were finally able to get their hands on Microsoft’s latest consoles yesterday. However, due to an unforeseen Xbox Live login issue, many buyers couldn’t enjoy their new consoles on launch day. Thankfully, Microsoft managed a quick recovery and fixed the login issue for most users in a matter of hours. But it seems like that the login issue may have just been the tip of the iceberg. Many Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S buyers are reportedly experiencing various hardware issues with their consoles, ranging from faulty disc drives to smoke coming out of the top vent.

We recently spotted a video of an Xbox Series X dramatically emitting smoke from the top vent doing the rounds on Twitter. Since many of the comments on the video were calling it fake, we checked the Xbox subreddit to see if anyone else was facing a similar issue. There we spotted another post about a smoking Xbox Series X, with a link in the comments that led us to this Xbox Series X hardware issue thread. There is another video of the Xbox Series X smoking itself up, on Twitter.

The Reddit thread includes several reports of users receiving DOA Xbox Series X units, units that completely shut down after just a couple of hours of use, overheating units, ones that sound like a refrigerator from the ’80s, and even ones with a faulty disc drive. While it isn’t exactly clear what’s causing these issues, we suspect that overheating could be the reason behind the random shutdowns, and in bad enough cases, for the smoke. As some users have pointed out, the loud noise in one of the videos linked above could be attributed to the device installing a game from the disc.

As of now, we’re not sure whether these issues are as widespread as they may seem since the aforementioned reports only account for just a small fraction of the total Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S sales, and social media can disproportionately draw attention to just a few cases. In case they are affecting a large number of consoles, we expect Microsoft to release an official statement on the matter in the coming days.

Bitwarden password manager adds support for Android 11’s inline autofill API

The Smart Keyboard Suggestions feature is inarguably one of the most useful additions in Android 11. The feature essentially streamlines the platform’s autofill experience by integrating inline autofill suggestions in keyboard apps and password managers. These suggestions then appear right at the top of the keyboard app, instead of appearing next to the input field. But to use this feature on your favorite keyboard app or password manager, developers first have to update their apps to support the feature. 1Password and Gbaord were among the first apps to be updated to support Android 11’s inline autofill API. And now, popular password manager Bitwarden has received support for the feature in its latest beta release.

As per a recent comment on Bitwarden’s GitHub (via Reddit user u/rodrigoswz), the password manager now supports Android 11’s inline autofill API on the beta channel. Once you install the beta update on an Android 11 device with a keyboard app that also supports the inline autofill API, you should start seeing password suggestions right on top of the keyboard (see attached screenshot). But if you aren’t using a keyboard app that supports the inline autofill API, Bitwarden will revert to the previous overlay that pops up next to the input field.

The comment further notes that the inline autofill suggestions will be “tinted according to the rules in the InlineSuggestionsRequest” so that it follows the current theme of the keyboard app, but the theme won’t influence Bitwarden’s logo. It also reveals that the feature may not work as intended with some browsers if the browser’s own autofill functions are enabled. It’s also worth noting that the feature is currently broken in Firefox (prod and beta) as the browser keeps re-initializing the keyboard and erasing the inline presentation. However, Firefox has addressed the issue in the latest nightly release, and the fix should roll out to the beta channel soon.

Download: OnePlus 5 finally gets OxygenOS 10.0.1 with several bug fixes, September 2020 patches

After several months of waiting, OnePlus 5 and 5T users finally got the OxygenOS 10 stable update (based on Android 10) for their devices earlier this year in May. But it was chock full of issues, ranging from poor battery life to broken EIS. The update was so problematic that OnePlus didn’t even list the build for download on its support website to prevent users from upgrading to the broken release. Since then, the company hasn’t released any OxygenOS 10 stable updates for the OnePlus 5 and 5T.

In September this year, OnePlus finally acknowledged the lack of software updates for the OnePlus 5 and 5T. The company revealed that an update was being processed “at the highest priority by the product team,” but the problems still hadn’t been fixed. It seems like OnePlus has now finally managed to iron out all the issues, as OxygenOS 10.0.1 has started rolling out to the OnePlus 5.

As per a recent post on the OnePlus Community forums, the company has started the incremental rollout of OxygenOS 10.0.1 for the OnePlus 5. The update includes bug fixes for several issues that were introduced in the previous update, and it also packs in the Android security patches for September 2020. Here’s the complete changelog for OxygenOS 10.0.1 for the OnePlus 5:

- Fixed the de-activated alarm issue when phone was powered off
- Updated Android Security Patch to 2020.09
- Updated GMS package to 2020.08

As with all OxygenOS updates, the latest release for the OnePlus 5 will be rolled out in a staged fashion. This means that the update will only reach a handful of devices today. After OnePlus ensures that there are no critical bugs with the update, it should roll out to more users. Do note that OxygenOS 10.0.1 is only being released for the OnePlus 5 at the moment, but the company has announced that it will begin the incremental rollout for the OnePlus 5T soon.

Google Chrome tests showing a voice search button in the top toolbar

Earlier this year in January, we learned that Google was working to replace the old voice search UI in Chrome’s address bar with the Google Assistant. At the time, we’d spotted two new commits in the Chromium Gerrit that highlighted a new flag called “Omnibox Assistant Voice Search” that would enable the use of the Google Assistant for omnibox voice queries. Google Chrome has now started testing a related UI change that will add a voice search button in the top toolbar.

A code commit related to the change was just merged to the Chromium Gerrit, and it added a new flag called “voice-button-in-top-toolbar” with the description “enables showing the voice search button in the top toolbar.” When this flag is enabled, and the flag for the share button in the top toolbar is disabled, a voice search button shows up in the top toolbar on the browser (see attached screenshot).

The description for the commit further states that if the omnibox-assistant-voice-search-flag is enabled, the new button will launch the Assistant search UI. In case the flag is disabled, the feature will fall back to the older voice search UI. It’s also worth noting that the share button flag will take precedence over the voice button flag, so if you have both enabled, you’ll only see the share button in the top toolbar.

This is yet another UI test of many in Google Chrome, and there’s no guarantee that it will trickle down and be enabled by default for users running the stable release. Google runs these kinds of tests all the time to see what users engage with the most. If this new feature receives sufficient engagement, it may be added to Google Chrome on the stable channel in a future release.
