The iPhone 12’s new MagSafe wireless charger works with some Android devices

Apple this month held a digital event to announce four new iPhone models, including the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. As part of the announcement, Apple introduced a new MagSafe charger – alongside other MagSafe accessories – which the company says is an improvement over traditional Qi wireless charging mats.

Featuring an array of magnets around the iPhone’s wireless charging coil, MagSafe can magnetically connect to Apple’s new iPhones and deliver 15W speeds. That means you’ll not only get perfect alignment every time, but you also get decently fast charging speeds. When charging other Qi-enabled devices, MagSafe can deliver up to 7.5W of power, meaning it’ll charge most Android devices that are compatible with wireless charging just fine. The only thing we weren’t sure of is whether or not any existing Android device can magnetically connect to the MagSafe charger, which is the system’s key selling point.

While we personally haven’t had the opportunity to test MagSafe with every Android device on the market, we can confirm that it magnetically attaches with some of the most recent high-profile devices, including the Google Pixel 5, the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2. We haven’t personally tried connecting the MagSafe charger to the Pixel 5, but we know it works courtesy of YouTuber ZolloTech (you can see the magic happen in the video embedded below.)

In his hands-on of the iPhone 12, XDA’s Ben Sin reported that the charger magnetically connects to his Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Galaxy S20 FE. It’s by no means a match made in heaven, but if you’re feeling a little adventurous, you can arrange the unholy union between Apple’s MagSafe and your Android device.

There are plenty of wireless charging options on the market, so there’s no real incentive to run out and buy Apple’s MagSafe if you own an Android phone, especially if you’re looking for faster speeds. What’s more exciting is what this might mean for the future of wireless charging. Hopefully, we’ll see Android smartphones in 2021 and beyond with their own MagSafe alternatives, eliminating the headache of accidentally misaligning your phone on a wireless charger.

uBreakiFix now offers nationwide at-home repair services for Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones

uBreakiFix will now come to you if you need a device repair. The company on Tuesday announced a nationwide mobile repair program called We Come to You, which will deploy more than 640 vehicles. The on-demand repair program is currently available in the U.S., with plans to expand to Canada by the end of 2020.

Customers will be able to book an appointment through uBreakiFix’s website. Just check your eligibility, schedule an appointment, and wait for the mobile repair representative to come to you. Depending on where you’re located, you can schedule same-day service, and a repair rep can be at your home or office in as little as two hours. Eligible services include smartphone screen repairs and battery replacements.

For now, uBreakiFix’s new program will perform repairs on Samsung and Google smartphones. The company said repairs won’t affect your device’s warranty or compromise features like water resistance. In the future, uBreakiFix plans to expand the program and offer repair services to other types of personal tech devices.

“The market has shifted significantly over the past 10 years,” said uBreakiFixit Co-Founder and President Justin Wetherill. “Customers have less time than ever, and they’re looking for goods and services that offer convenience without sacrificing quality.”

There is a $30 service fee required to secure your appointment, which means if you cancel, you won’t be refunded. When you do secure an appointment, all repairs will be done inside the company’s mobile repair labs, so social distancing protocols will presumably be followed. To see if you’re eligible for a mobile repair, you can visit uBreakiFix’s website, where you can enter in your zip code.

Microsoft rolls out the Windows 10 20H2 update with a new start menu design

Windows 10 was released in 2015 and represented a big change of direction for Microsoft’s operating system. For years, Microsoft’s approach to Windows has been to relegate major feature updates for all new versions of the OS. As a result, updates to Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.1 were mostly geared towards improving the security and refining already-existing features. Windows 10, though, has consistently added new features and improvements on top of the base release through bi-yearly major updates. The latest of such updates, Windows 10 20H2, is now rolling out, bringing some significant changes.

The most immediately noticeable change is the new start menu design. Gone are the colorful tiles that resembled the Windows 8.1 UI. Instead, we have more minimalist tiles and icons that are single-colored and semi-transparent. These fit more closely with Windows 10’s new design language and guidelines that Microsoft has been slowly pushing to more of its apps. This new start menu design is also made to better fit Windows 10’s light and dark themes, but if you’d like to add the color back to the menu, you can choose an accent color by going into Settings.

There are also several other changes. Among them includes the ability to change the refresh rate of your display right from Settings, changes to make notifications more comfortable and visible, and a cleaner, more personalized Taskbar with less clutter. Microsoft Edge users will also be glad to know that new features, such as Collections (which allows you to easily share and save content you find online) and Price Comparison (which looks up the prices of things in several retailers to allow you to find the lowest price) are coming to Edge ahead of the Black Friday and Christmas shopping seasons.

The update should be rolling out over-the-air in the following weeks to a computer near you through Windows Update! Keep in mind that your PC must be running at least Windows 10 version 1903 for the update to show up. Microsoft says availability is being limited to ensure a reliable download experience, so don’t fret if the update doesn’t appear right away. There are a handful of known issues with the update, but most people shouldn’t need to worry about the update breaking anything.

Nokia 2 V Tella is an $89 budget phone for Verizon with the MediaTek Helio A22 SoC

HMD Global’s Nokia smartphone lineup is pretty straightforward: the lower the model number, the lower-end the device. For example, the Nokia 1 is the lowest-end device from the company, while the Nokia 9 PureView is the company’s highest-end model. But there are also secondary models that branch off from the main line, and the differences between these devices can get pretty confusing. Case in point, the new Nokia 2 V Tella: A new budget smartphone announced today that’s available for Verizon Wireless customers in the U.S. The Nokia 2 V is essentially a rebranded Nokia 2.1, so the new 2 V Tella seems to be more of the same. For its price, it seems to actually be a pretty decent phone for Verizon customers in the U.S. who have a lower budget.

The Nokia 2 V Tella isn’t exactly what you’d call a speed beast. After all, it is focused on the essentials only. The MediaTek Helio A22 system-on-chip is fabricated using a 12nm manufacturing process and has a quad-core CPU configuration consisting of four ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocked at up to 2.0 GHz. It is a pretty outdated chip, having launched in mid-2018, but it’s not a bad processor for the price. Because of the modem in this chip, you obviously won’t find fancy features like 5G connectivity. This is the same chip that is found in the Nokia 2.2 and Nokia 2.3, after all. The other new Nokia 2-series device, the Nokia 2.4 brings a slightly better MediaTek Helio P22 chip.

As for the rest of the specs, you have a 5.45″ HD+ resolution display with an 18:9 aspect ratio, so no fancy bezel-less design will be found here. Its dimensions measure 5.93″ x 2.82″ x 0.36″ and it weighs 6.35oz. The phone has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. The 3,000 mAh battery is hardly impressive considering the Nokia 2.3 had a 4,000 mAh one, but it should still be able to provide decent battery life considering the device’s internals. Plus, it’s apparently removable. Surprisingly, the phone has a USB Type-C port, which you sometimes still don’t see at this price point. The phone supports charging at 10W, though only a 5W charger is included in the box. Unsurprisingly, though, the phone has a 3.5mm headphone jack, which you do still see at this price point. There’s a dual rear camera with an 8MP and 2MP sensor, as well as a 5MP front-facing one. Finally, the device is running Android 10 out-of-the-box and has a Google Assistant key.

What is great, though, is the price: HMD Global says the Nokia 2 V Tella will be available on Verizon for $168 in a blue color. What’s a bit confusing, though, is that HMD Global’s press release mentions that the device will also be available at Walmart for $89. We’re not sure why there is a discrepancy, but the phone has already been listed on Walmart.com at this price, so we don’t think it’s a mistake. Regardless, this is a fairly decent price for a carrier phone in the U.S., as you’re getting a dirt-cheap device that will work straight out of the box on Verizon’s network.
