[Update: Official] OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei leaves company for new hardware venture

Update 1 (10/16/2020 @ 10:38 AM ET): Carl has confirmed his departure from OnePlus. Scroll to the bottom for more information. The article as published on October 13, 2020, is preserved below.

OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, who’s been the face of the company in the west for the last seven years, has reportedly left the company. News regarding his departure first popped up on Reddit (via AndroidPolice), when user JonSigur shared screenshots of internal memos at OnePlus. The memos listed the company’s leadership structure, but Pei’s name wasn’t included. The screenshots also mentioned that Emily Dai, who’s been in charge of the company’s operations in India, was recently appointed as the head of the Nord product line globally. Pei was previously in-charge of Nord, and he was a prominent figure in the recently released documentary about the phone’s development.

Two sources familiar with the matter have confirmed to Android Central that Pei had left his position at OnePlus in recent weeks, and no longer appears in the company’s latest organizational chart. Although OnePlus and Pei are yet to release a statement on the matter, a report from TechCrunch claims that Pei has left the company to start his own venture.

OnePlus is scheduled to launch the OnePlus 8T in just a day, and Pei’s departure in the midst of a major product launch has raised questions about the circumstances of his departure. The news comes just weeks before Pei’s latest project, the OnePlus Nord, is expected to make its way to US shores in the form of two affordable devices — the OnePlus Nord N10 and N100. The company’s other co-founder, Pete Lau, is still at the company and holds the position of CEO. However, he recently took on an additional role as Senior Vice President and Chief Product Experience Officer of OPLUS, an investment firm that oversees OnePlus, OPPO, and possibly others.

Nokia secures $14.1m NASA funding to roll out 4G on the Moon

Nokia is teaming up with NASA to ensure that the new wave of lunar astronauts will be able to post their experience to their Instagram account if they so desire. The Finnish telecoms company will receive $14.1m funding from the US space agency to build a 4G cellphone network on the moon. The announcement comes as part of a $370m slew of contracts issued yesterday, as NASA pushes toward a return to the Moon in 2024 – with the first crew of the Artemis missions expected to include at least one woman.

The contract has been awarded to Nokia’s US subsidiary but will draw on the experience of the whole company. “The system could support lunar surface communications at greater distances, increased speeds, and provide more reliability than current standards,” said NASA in awarding the contract.

The 4G network would be used by astronauts, vehicles and as a foothold for any future permanent Moonbase: “With NASA funding, Nokia will look at how terrestrial technology could be modified for the lunar environment to support reliable, high-rate communications,” adds Jim Reuter, associate administrator for NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate.

During the original 1969-1972 Apollo missions, engineers were fully reliant on radio communication through a network of transmitters, base stations, and relays, back on earth, using NASA’s ‘S-Band’ of 2-4Ghz. A digital, cellular service will be a vast improvement in terms of quality and efficiency of surface-to-surface communications, once we return to the Moon to stay. It does give rise to the question of why 5G isn’t being considered. We believe this is because 5G signals can only reach shorter distances, meaning that more base stations would be required. 4G will do an ample job in those early days, with far less infrastructure. Maybe the moon will get a 5G (or even 6G) upgrade once we’re settled on the surface. Just don’t expect Huawei to win that tender.
