MIUI 12 is the newest big release for Xiaomi smartphones, perhaps even bigger than an Android version jump. Features on Xiaomi devices are dictated more by their MIUI versions than the underlying Android version, so a MIUI version upgrade is an exciting event. The first batch of devices to receive the MIUI 12 stable update included the Xiaomi Mi 9, Redmi K20/Mi 9T, and Redmi K20 Pro/Mi 9T Pro. As we reach the end of June 2020, Xiaomi’s first phase of MIUI 12 rollout is complete, as many more devices have been added since the initial rollout. This article will serve as the central repository of download links for all Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO devices that have received their official MIUI 12 stable updates. We’ll update it regularly with fresh builds!

MIUI 12: Features

MIUI 12 was announced in April 2020, following the footsteps of MIUI 11 that gained massive popularity thanks to Xiaomi’s hardware push as well as the feature abundance within the UX.

Generic flashing instructions are available at the bottom of this article. However, we advise users to refer to the device forums for specific flashing instructions for their device, in case there are any variations or special instructions that need to be followed.

Another important point to note: Xiaomi follows only a thin distinction between “beta stable” update and “stable” updates. Beta stable updates are only intended for users enrolled within the Mi Pilot beta testing program, meaning that builds assigned for this group will not install on devices with Mi Accounts that do not have the requisite permission. Once the Mi Pilot beta testers give positive feedback, the same build then gets opened up as a stable release, creating a lot of confusion — for instance, the same builds linked below might first fail to install, but then they will make an appearance through the official OTA. If you get the error message that the update is for closed beta testers only, you can sideload the update through TWRP.

Flashing Instructions for MIUI 12

Note that these are generic flashing instructions that should generally be applicable across Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO devices. However, there is a possibility that there is a variation that is unique to your device, so we strongly advise visiting your device forums for device-specific instructions.

Recovery ROM Installation for MIUI 12

Recovery ROMs come with a .zip file extension and can be installed either through the Local Update method from within MIUI, or through the Xiaomi stock recovery. You can also use a custom recovery like TWRP for installing these ROMs, though do note that device-specific instructions may differ in that case.

1. Local Update method:
   1. Transfer the download .zip file to your phone, and ensure you place the file in the “downloaded_rom” folder in the internal storage of your device. If no such folder exists, create one in your internal storage base directory.
   2. Within your phone, navigate to Settings > About Phone > System Update, and then press the three-dot icon in the top-right corner, and select “Choose Update Package”.
   3. If the “Choose Update Package” option is missing, tap on the MIUI logo 10 times to activate the option.
   4. Choose the downloaded .zip file.
   5. Wait for the update to install.
2. Recovery method:
   1. Rename the downloaded .zip file to update.zip and transfer it to the base directory of your phone’s internal storage.
   2. Reboot your phone into recovery mode by powering it off and then pressing both the Power and the Volume Up buttons together.
   3. Scroll to the “Install update.zip” option using the volume keys, and select the option using the power button.
   4. Wait for the update to install.
   5. Choose the “Reboot” option if your phone does not reboot by itself after installation is completed.

Fastboot ROM Installation for MIUI 12

Fastboot ROMs come with a .tgz file extension and require a Windows computer for the installation, as well as a phone with an unlocked bootloader. However, despite being comparatively more complicated to install than Recovery ROMs, Fastboot ROMs are sometimes the only way to boot into a working system. For instructions on unlocking the bootloader of your phone, check your device’s subforums on XDA.

1. Download MiFlash Tool on your Windows computer. The latest version can be found in Step 1 of this link. Once downloaded, extract the tool and install it. It is also advisable to have ADB and Fastboot installed, just in case you need it.
2. Reboot your phone into Download mode by powering it off and then pressing both the Power and Volume Down buttons together.
3. Connect your phone to the computer using the appropriate USB cable.
4. Download the Fastboot ROM .tgz file and extract it. Remember the extract location, as you will need to paste the address into MiFlash Tool.
5. Run MiFlash Tool on your Windows Computer and in the address bar within the tool, paste the extract location from Step 4.
6. Click “Refresh” within MiFlash and the app should automatically recognize your device.
7. Click “Run” within MiFlash to flash the ROM file to the device.
8. The progress bar within MiFlash will turn green, which indicates that the ROM was successfully installed. Your device should boot automatically to the new version.

LineageOS 17.1 builds are here for the Redmi K20/Xiaomi Mi 9T, Samsung Galaxy S5, and Samsung Galaxy Note 3

The team behind the popular LineageOS custom ROM has extended LineageOS 17.1 support to several devices over the last couple of months. While a lot of popular devices like the OnePlus One, Google Pixel 3a, OnePlus 7T Pro, etc. have already received support for the Android 10-based build, the team is still working on releasing builds for more devices. Since our previous coverage, the team has added support for four more devices.

The following devices have now received official support for LineageOS 17.1 based on Android 10: Redmi K20/Xiaomi Mi 9T, Samsung Galaxy S5, Galaxy S5 Active, and Galaxy Note 3. Before you go ahead and flash LineageOS 17.1 on your device, make sure you read the installation instructions and other linked documentation, including the guides and special boot modes. LineageOS 17.1 builds are here for the Redmi K20/Xiaomi Mi 9T, Samsung Galaxy S5, and Samsung Galaxy Note 3

The team behind the popular LineageOS custom ROM has extended LineageOS 17.1 support to several devices over the last couple of months. While a lot of popular devices like the OnePlus One, Google Pixel 3a, OnePlus 7T Pro, etc. have already received support for the Android 10-based build, the team is still working on releasing builds for more devices. Since our previous coverage, the team has added support for four more devices.

The following devices have now received official support for LineageOS 17.1 based on Android 10: Redmi K20/Xiaomi Mi 9T, Samsung Galaxy S5, Galaxy S5 Active, and Galaxy Note 3. If you’re interested in trying the custom ROM on any of these devices, you can now download the recovery flashable package by clicking on “Get the builds here” on their respective Wiki pages (linked below).

Before you go ahead and flash LineageOS 17.1 on your device, make sure you read the installation instructions and other linked documentation, including the guides and special boot modes. Also, make sure to take a backup of your data before you start the process or you may lose it during the installation.

Google is testing a new UI on the Nest Hub Max with tabs, contextual panels, and a dark mode

Google appears to be testing a revamped user interface for the Nest Hub Max. A video showcasing the changes (via AndroidPolice) reveals the UI will feature a touch-centric experience with contextual panels for smart home control, tabs, and much more. There also appears to be a dark mode in the works.

The tabs allow users to quickly access different settings. The default tab appears to be “Your morning,” which shows things like weather and contextual panels for smart home control. This section will also presumably feature what’s on your calendar, too. There are other tabs for things like “Home control,” “Media” and “Communicate,” the last of which will allow you to quickly make a phone call, make a Google Duo call, or broadcast to a room. You’ll also see a panel for contacts so you can easily start a call with friends or family.

It’s quite a big chance for Google’s smart displays, which have largely prioritized an interface that can be navigated by voice. Adding in a more touch-friendly interface makes devices like the Nest Hub Max more accessible; sometimes it’s hard to figure out how to navigate the smart display’s UI, both through voice and touch, so this is a welcome change.

As for the dark mode, it’s pretty self-explanatory. Instead of a stark white background, turning on dark mode will allow users to choose a UI appearance that’s friendlier to low light environments. While you can manually toggle dark mode, it appears there’s also an auto option, which will likely turn on dark mode when the sun goes down.

Finally, speaking of touch controls, it looks like the revamped UI will support a new tap-and-hold gesture. When you tap-and-hold on a card, for example, a menu will come up to open that card or dismiss it.

It’s unclear how widely Google is testing the new UI for the Next Hub Max, but the company has been working on making changes for a few months. Hopefully, it’ll roll out to more Nest Hub smart displays soon — and other Google Assistant-equipped smart displays for that matter. For what it’s worth, the new UI appears to be available in software version v32.24.0 for the tipster.

Detachable laptops differ from 2-in-1s, in that you can entirely remove them from their keyboard and use them entirely as a tablet. They tend to be a lot less bulky, although they may compromise on specifications as a result. The Lenovo Chromebook Duet is one of the best detachable Chromebooks on the market, though it features a MediaTek Helio P60T, 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM, and 64GB of eMMC storage. It’s a full HD screen too, so it’s a perfect media streaming machine when it’s engaged in tablet mode.

Want to use it for work? Reconnect the keyboard, and it turns back into a laptop with a fully functioning keyboard. It’s not going to be the fastest or the best, but it’ll get the job done. It’ll do it without breaking the bank, too, as it starts at $289.99 from Lenovo’s website.

Best Chromebook for battery life: Google Pixelbook Go

Maybe the most important part of a Chromebook to you isn’t the performance, but its endurance. The Google Pixelbook Go offers modest specifications as it’s powered by an 8th gen M3, M5, or M7. However, you do get up to 256GB of SSD storage and up to 16GB of RAM, so it’s not as if you’re going to have any noticeable lags or stutters. The base model has a 13.3-inch full HD touchscreen, though there’s a 4K screen option too. What’s more, it comes in at just over 1KG for the FHD model.

The M3 series of Intel chipsets run fanless, which means they also use a lot less power. That, coupled with the 41.41 watt-hour battery, means that you’ll get up to 12 hours of battery life on a single charge. When it runs out of battery, it has a 45W USB-C fast charger to quickly charge it back up. Google says 20 minutes of charge is enough for 2 hours of usage. With a starting price of $649, this may be well worth a look.

If you’re looking for the best Chromebook on a budget, then look no further than the Acer Chromebook 514. As you’ve seen here, many Chromebooks like to pack everything and the kitchen sink into a specification sheet, despite ChromeOS not being all that intensive. If you’re looking for a basic media machine with a touch screen that can get the job done, then the Intel Celeron N3450-powered Acer Chromebook 514 may do the job.

You want the best of the best, but for students? As a student myself, the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook is a dream machine. It has a 13.3-inch 4K touchscreen with stereo speakers, the perfect setup for media streaming. In an age of online lectures, this will be perfect for catching up. Even better, the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook comes with a Samsung Pen that hides inside the laptop’s body. When you’re done with work, you can then relax and watch Netflix or YouTube.

Worth noting is that they’re still just laptop speakers, though, so it might be worth investing in an external speaker or just a nice set of headphones for use with it. It’s got an i5-10210U and 8GB of RAM, which is more than enough for note-taking and media streaming. If you’re doing more intensive tasks, you can set up crouton or Crostini to use some Linux applications.

While it’s certainly not going to be the fastest, the Samsung Chromebook Plus V2 (LTE) will do the job if you really need mobile data support on your laptop. It’s powered by an Intel Celeron 3965Y, packs 4GB of RAM and 32GB of eMMC storage. It’s got a 12.2-inch full HD touchscreen, which can be folded over to be used as a tablet. It comes with a pen too, so you’ll also be able to use this one to take notes if you need it! It’s got a starting price of $499.99 – a bit steep admittedly, but that’s the cost of LTE these days.

Best value Chromebook: ASUS Chromebook Flip C434

It’s hard to pick just one; however, I settled on the ASUS Chromebook Flip C434 as the best value Chromebook that money can buy currently. It’s not the most souped-up Chromebook in terms of hardware, but it features pretty much everything that you’d want in a Chromebook. It’s a 2-in-1, meaning that you can use it as a tablet, and the 14-inch touchscreen is full HD. The base model comes with an Intel Core M3-8100Y, 4GB of RAM, and 32GB of eMMC storage for $499.99. You can bump that up to 64GB of storage or up to 8GB of RAM with 64GB of storage, and other models have an i5-8200Y processor or an i7-8500Y processor as well.

This isn’t exactly the most “flagship” package, but it’s the perfect balance of price to performance in a Chromebook that you’ll get. Chromebooks aren’t really designed to be powerhouse machines, and they’re lightweight enough that you don’t need beefy hardware or a lot of storage to get the most out of it. Want something for college work and other basic tasks along with the ability to watch YouTube or Netflix? Maybe give the ASUS Chromebook Flip C434 ago. You can probably even pick this one up second-hand if you do a bit of digging.
