Samsung Galaxy Note 8 security updates dropped from monthly to quarterly release schedule

Earlier this year in May, Samsung dropped the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ to a quarterly security update schedule in order to accommodate newer devices in the monthly update schedule. Now, according to a recent SamMobile report, Samsung is doing the same for its other flagship from 2017 — the Galaxy Note 8.

The Galaxy Note 8 was launched back in August 2017 with Android 7.1.1 Nougat. The device was then updated to Android 8.0 Oreo in 2018, and Samsung released the Android 9.0 Pie update with One UI for the device early last year in February. Since Samsung typically releases two major Android OS updates for its flagships, the Note 8 won’t be receiving any further Android OS upgrade. However, the company will still push security updates to the device for another year on a quarterly basis.

Samsung has a decent track record of releasing monthly software updates and security patches for its flagship devices. The company usually pushes monthly updates for the first three years of a device’s life cycle, followed by a year of quarterly updates. At times, the company even releases critical security patches for devices that are over four years old, like it recently did for the Galaxy S6. So we can expect Samsung to release critical security updates for the Galaxy Note 8 as late as 2021.

But while Samsung may not push an official build of One UI based on Android 10 to the Galaxy Note 8, you can always download an Android 10 custom ROM for the device on our forums. There are a variety of great options to choose from, including unofficial builds of LineageOS 17.1, Project Sakura, and Resurrection Remix.

Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Meet, etc. get new icons and features as part of G Suite’s rebranding into Google Workspace

Earlier this year in July, we learned that Google was working on integrating Docs, Chat, and Meet with Gmail. And soon after the first leak popped up, Google announced the integration as an early access preview for G Suite customers. The company has now gone ahead and completely revamped G Suite as Google Workspace, with new features and icons for Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Meet, and more.

As per a blog post on the matter, the new Google Workspace offers all of the productivity apps in the company’s repertoire, including Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Meet, in one convenient location.

Thanks to this deeper integration, Google Workspace users will now be able to dynamically create and collaborate on a document with guests in a Chat room, share content, work together with others outside their organization, and ensure that everyone has access to the same information.

The company has also introduced a couple of new features for its services, including support for file previews in Docs, Sheets, and Slides, and support for @mention in documents that will bring up a smart chip with contact details.

Furthermore, the company plans to roll out Meet picture-in-picture support to Docs, Sheets, and Slides in the coming months. All these new integrations are currently limited to Google Workspace customers, but the company plans on bringing the new user experience to consumers in the coming months.

Along with the integrated user experience, the company has also adopted a new brand identity that “reflects our ambitious product vision and the way our products work together.” As part of the new brand identity, the company has now revealed new four-color icons for services like Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Meet, Docs, Sheets, and Slides. Additionally, the company has announced that it will offer more tailored offerings for new Google Workspace users. Samsung announces Android 11-based One UI 3.0 public beta for the Galaxy S20 series

About a month ago, Samsung announced the One UI 3.0 beta program for Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20 Plus, and the Galaxy 20 Ultra. The initial beta was meant for the developer community and it was available for U.S. and Korean Galaxy S20 devices. While power users can manually sideload the developer beta build to try out Android 11, the company has now officially announced the beginning of the One UI 3.0 public beta program for the Galaxy S20 series.

As per a recent post on the “Beta notices” section of the Samsung Members app, the One UI 3.0 beta program is now publicly available for the Galaxy S20 lineup. As the builds are cumulative in nature, the upcoming first public beta (tagged as ZTJ3) should carry all the new features introduced in the previous developer preview build (software version ZTI7). The Android security patch level (SPL) has been bumped, while there are several improvements to Samsung’s own Android skin in the new firmware. For instance, the home screen and the quick panel designs have received a fresh coat of paint to make them compatible with different screen sizes.

Samsung has a history of testing new beta updates with customers in its home country of South Korea first so this announcement is something we’ve been waiting for. However, the actual rollout might take more time as suggested by the Beta Operation Manager of Samsung’s Korean Community Forums. The One UI 3.0 public beta with Android 11 for the U.S. variants of the Galaxy S20 will likely follow in the coming days, but there’s no word on it just yet.

If you’re a Samsung S20 series user, you can go ahead and participate in the One UI beta program right away. Do note that participation in the program requires a Samsung account, which you can create by heading over to this website. We hope that the beta program will be extended to a few other regions, including Europe and India, albeit we don’t have any information on the release timeline for the same.

Here are what’s likely the OnePlus 8T’s wallpapers [Download]

OnePlus is all set to launch its next flagship, the OnePlus 8T, on October 14th. The company has already started teasing the device, and we’ve seen plenty of leaks about its design and specifications so far. While OnePlus has confirmed some of these specifications, like the 4,500mAh battery capacity and 65W fast charging support, it’s yet to reveal some of the other key details about the upcoming device. As with all previous OnePlus flagships, we also expect the OnePlus 8T to come with a new set of wallpapers. But while there are still a few days before OnePlus officially unveils the device, we may have gotten our hands on the OnePlus 8T’s wallpapers.

OnePlus 8T XDA Forums

XDA Senior Member Some_Random_Username has managed to extract a new version of OnePlus Wallpaper Resources (v. 2.0.1.200916023912) which contains a few new wallpapers. And we have reason to believe that these new wallpapers are the ones that will debut with the OnePlus 8T later this month. The newly added wallpapers are appended with “k” in the name and it also includes JSON config files for “kebab”, which is widely expected to be the code-name for the OnePlus 8T. Since OnePlus is known for adding the first letter of the device code-name to the wallpaper files, we believe that these new wallpapers are for the upcoming device. Here’s a preview of what’s likely the OnePlus 8T’s wallpapers:

The attached wallpapers are a compressed version of the original, with lower file size and resolution. If you want to download the OnePlus 8T wallpapers for your device, you can get them in their original resolution from the link below.

In case you’ve not been keeping up with our coverage of the upcoming OnePlus 8T, leaks and rumors about the device suggest that it will feature a 6.55-inch “Fluid Display” with a 120Hz refresh rate and FHD+ resolution. The display is expected to have a touch sampling rate of 240Hz, a JNCD of around 0.3, 100% DCI-P3 color gamut coverage, HDR10+ support, and 8192 levels of brightness adjustment.

The device is rumored to feature a quad-camera setup with a 48MP primary sensor, a 16MP wide-angle sensor, a 5MP macro sensor, and a 2MP monochrome sensor. As mentioned earlier, the device will include a 4,500mAh battery with support for 65W fast charging. The company has also confirmed that it won’t be launching a “Pro” variant of its flagship this time around.
