Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 will support India’s NavIC in a future update

Back in October last year, American chipmaker Qualcomm announced support for India’s NavIC Satellite Navigation system in select chipsets. Then, earlier this year in January, the company officially announced the new Snapdragon 720G, Snapdragon 662, and Snapdragon 460 SoCs, with support for the Indian satellite navigation system. However, it’s flagship Snapdragon 865 chip still doesn’t support the Indian navigation system. Thankfully though, that’s set to change soon as per a recent announcement from Qualcomm.

Qualcomm has now revealed that the Snapdragon 865 will be NavIC capable with its final software update. The company was quoted saying, “In October 2019, Qualcomm announced support for India’s NavIC Satellite Navigation System in commercial chipset platforms and we are pleased to be working with ISRO to bring NavIV to Indian consumers and enhance their navigation experience via more accurate location performance, faster time-to-first-fix (TTFF) position acquisition, and improved robustness. Recent Snapdragon Mobile Platform launches such as Snapdragon 765, 720G, 662 and 460 support NavIC. Snapdragon 865 is NavIC capable with the final software update coming to our OEMs around April 2020.”

The aforementioned “final software update” that will be released to OEMs later this year is the Board Support Package (BSP) that Qualcomm offers to OEMs. OEMs take the BSP and build their Android releases on top of it. This means that even if Qualcomm releases the final software update in April, it will be quite a while before the NavIC support reaches consumers via an Android update from their respective OEM.

For the unaware, the NavIC or Navigation with Indian Constellation system covers India and a region extending 1,500km from its borders to provide real-time positioning and timing services on two levels. The satellite system uses the L5 signal at a frequency of 1176.45 with a bandwidth of 24MHz (1164.45-1188.45MHz) and currently consists of 7 satellites with 2 on the ground as standbys. With NavIC support on Qualcomm’s chips, users are expected to see a major improvement in location-based applications in India.

OPPO launches the Reno3 Pro internationally with dual front cameras, quad rear cameras, and MediaTek Helio P95

OPPO had launched the Reno3 and Reno3 Pro in China at the very end of 2019, bringing over a good set of 5G phones to the Chinese market. While 5G is indeed the next step of evolution for smartphones, the rollout of this technology is at nascent stages in several parts of the world. In some regions, a 5G phone would be a fair few years early to the market, and for a consumer in those regions, it would make very little sense to pay a premium for a 5G smartphone right now. Realizing the differing need of the market, OPPO has launched a 4G variant of the Reno3 Pro for the international market at an event in India.

The OPPO Reno3 Pro 4G is similar to the Reno3 Pro 5G in terms of a few design elements, but there are a fair few differences across the devices. The first visually noticeable change is the display, as the 4G variant comes with a flat Super AMOLED display as opposed to the curved display on the Reno3 Pro 5G. Consequently, the 4G variant also loses out on some of the highlight features on the Reno3 Pro 5G, like the 90Hz refresh rate.

Powering the Reno3 Pro (4G) is the newly announced MediaTek Helio P95 SoC, coupled with 8GB RAM as well as 128GB and 256GB storage options. The change in the processor was expected since the Reno3 Pro launched in China came with 5G capabilities, and 5G smartphones in markets like India do not really make sense right now in early 2020.

The main focus of the Reno3 Pro is the camera setup, both on the front and rear. The primary 64MP sensor is capable of shooting “ultra-clear 108MP image” through clever use of multi-frame photos and sub-pixel interpolation in broad daylight. Zoom duties are handled by the telephoto camera, providing 2x optical zoom, and up to 20x digital zoom. For the front, the phone sports a 44MP main camera and a 2MP depth sensor, ensuring your selfies are top-notch, even in low light situations thanks to Ultra Night Selfie Mode.

The OPPO Reno3 Pro will be available in India from March 6 in Auroral Blue, Midnight Black, and Sky White colors. Redmi Note 9 launches in India on March 12

Xiaomi’s Redmi Note lineup of devices is undoubtedly one of the most popular series from the Chinese manufacturers. The mid-range devices are known to offer great hardware at a compelling price and, as a result, they’ve been among the best selling devices from the company. For instance, the Redmi Note 7 was among the top 10 best selling smartphones of 2019 and the Redmi Note 8 and Note 8 Pro were among the top 10 best selling smartphones in Q4 2019. Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 8 (review) and Note 8 Pro (review) in China back in August last year, featuring a Snapdragon 665 SoC and MediaTek Helio G90T SoC, respectively. The devices were launched in India late last year in October and Xiaomi managed to sell 1 million units of the two devices within a month of launch. Now, according to a recent tweet from Xiaomi’s Global VP and MD Xiaomi India, Manu Kumar Jain, the company is planning to launch the Redmi Note 9 in India on March 12.

In the tweet, Jain reveals that the next Redmi Note device launches on March 12 and the accompanying image has a large number 9 with four cameras in between. This confirms that the company will be launching the Redmi Note 9 series at the event. The tweet further reveals that the upcoming Redmi Note 9 will lay strong emphasis on the cameras and will offer “ProCamerasMaxPerformance”. As of now, Xiaomi hasn’t confirmed if it’ll be launching both the Redmi Note 9 and Note 9 Pro at the launch event, but considering past trends, it’s safe to assume that the company might launch both the devices together. Interestingly though, the Redmi Note 9 series hasn’t been launched in China yet so we currently don’t have any information about its specifications or pricing.

Xiaomi showcases 40W fast wireless charging technology which can charge 0-100% in 40 mins

Wireless charging tech on smartphones has been around for quite a while now. However, unlike other innovations in the smartphone world, wireless charging hasn’t caught up. While this low rate of adoption can be attributed to several reasons, there’s one major issue that has limited the spread of wireless charging on modern smartphones — slow charging speeds. At a time when a wired charging connection can, most likely, get your smartphone from 0-100% in just about an hour, most wireless charging solutions on premium flagships can barely match that performance.

In a bid to address this issue, several smartphone manufacturers have been working on more powerful and efficient wireless charging tech. For instance, earlier this year Xiaomi launched its Mi 10 flagship lineup in China, which features support for 30W fast wireless charging. The Mi 10 lineup was one-upped by Vivo’s APEX 2020 concept, which features support for 60W fast wireless charging. According to the company, the 60W wireless charging solution is capable of charging a 2,000mAh battery in just 20 minutes. But since the APEX 2020 is just a concept smartphone, we can’t expect its Super FlashCharge technology to make it to production devices anytime soon. Xiaomi, however, might bring a 40W fast wireless charging solution to its devices sometime later this year.

In a recent post on Weibo, the company’s co-founder Lei Jun revealed the company’s new wireless flash charging technology which boasts of 40W output capabilities. As seen in the video above, the new fast charging technology can charge a 4,000mAh battery from 0-57% (2,280mAh) in just 20 minutes, while taking about 40 minutes to get it up to 100%. In effect, this makes Xiaomi’s wireless flash charging technology faster than Vivo’s 60W Super FlashCharge. While it would be great to see this new technology in an upcoming Xiaomi device, the company hasn’t revealed any information about the release timeline for the same. It’s also worth noting that the phone in the video is a prototype/custom Mi 10 Pro.
