Samsung Galaxy S20 series pre-orders open in India at ₹66,999 ($937) onward

The Samsung Galaxy S20 series is Samsung’s latest flagship lineup, bringing the best of consumer-ready smartphone technology from Samsung into the hands of consumers. The Samsung Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, and Galaxy S20 Ultra are the first Samsung smartphones that come equipped with a 120Hz high refresh rate Dynamic AMOLED display. They also have a ton of other notable features, such as a maximum resolution of 2K, SuperFast charging, in-display ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, and an improved camera setup across the lineup. Samsung had already announced pricing and availability for the S20 series for several key regions, and now, the company has announced pricing, pre-order and sale details for the Galaxy S20 series in India.

In India, the Samsung Galaxy S20 starts at a price of ₹66,999 ($937); the Samsung Galaxy S20+ starts at a price of ₹73,999 ($1035); while the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra starts at a price of ₹92,999 ($1300). Samsung has not clarified the pricing of the storage variants, so we presume these prices to reflect the base 128GB storage across the three models. The Galaxy S20 will be available in Cosmic Grey, Cloud Blue, and Cloud Pink colors; the Galaxy S20+ will be available in Cosmic Grey, Cloud Blue, Cosmic Black colors; and the Galaxy S20 Ultra will be available in Cosmic Grey and Cosmic Black colors.

Pre-orders of the device open on February 15, 2020, at 12 noon at Samsung.com. Consumers who have pre-booked the phone will be among the first to receive their new phone from March 6, 2020, onwards. Customers who choose to pre-book the new devices can pick up the new Samsung Galaxy Buds+ for an additional ₹1,999 ($28) in case they opt for the S20+ or S20 Ultra, or for an additional ₹2,999 ($42) in case they opt for the S20. They can also avail Samsung Care+ at an additional ₹1,999 ($42) on each of the three phones, which will give them protection against accidental and liquid damage for one year.

Samsung is also offering double data benefits across the handful of telecoms in India. Jio users get double data benefits, plus an additional 1-year unlimited service under the Jio ₹4,999 ($70) annual plan — essentially giving them 700GB data per year for two years. Airtel prepaid users get double data on recharges of ₹298 ($4) and ₹398 ($5.5) for their first 10 consecutive recharges. Vodafone Idea prepaid users get double data on recharge of ₹399 ($5.5) with 56 days validity for their first 6 recharges.

It isn’t immediately clear if users in India will get Exynos 990/5G variants of the S20 and S20+, so keep that in mind if you choose to pre-order.

POCO is sending the POCO X2 to custom ROM and kernel developers

If you have been following Android news in recent years, you have likely heard of the POCO and its first phone, the renowned POCO F1. POCO started off as a sub-brand under Xiaomi in 2018 but has since graduated into its own independent brand in 2020 with its own separate and distinct market strategy. The POCO X2 is its newest device in the market, bringing to the table the same value-oriented pricing that made the POCO F1 a winner. What the POCO X2 also carries over from the POCO F1 is developer-friendliness — POCO had promised Day 1 kernel source release, and the company delivered. Now, POCO is going one step further in its support for the developer community by sending out the POCO X2 to custom ROM and kernel developers.

The POCO X2 comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G, which should make development efforts easier thanks to the existence of the Qualcomm CodeAurora forums. Stadia’s free tier will be available first to Pro subscribers, 5 new games incoming

With the launch of Google Stadia, the company promised that there would be a free tier within “the next few months.” The idea of a free tier is that potential-buyers can test the service before going all-in on a kit and a subscription, in order to avoid unnecessary spending in case your internet connection can’t keep up. Currently, the Founder’s edition of Google Stadia costs $129, with a $10 monthly subscription required after a three-month trial. That monthly subscription nets you access to a handful of complimentary games, and you’ll need to purchase any others. Stadia’s free tier is finally coming, though it’ll be first available to Pro subscribers, and there are 5 new complimentary games set to arrive as well.

Those who purchased Founder’s editions will have received, at the earliest, a beta code on the 19th of November 2019. That means the three-month subscriptions are set to end in less than a week’s time, and those who may have purchased games were worried that they would not be able to access them anymore if they canceled their subscription. The idea of the free tier is that you can still play your own purchased games on the service, but any free games redeemed through the Pro subscription will be removed from your account. Games will also be limited to 1080p streams. Google confirmed all of that in a statement to Android Police.

While we know that the free tier of Stadia is widely anticipated, we aren’t announcing specific timing just yet, beyond Phil’s interview in Protocol. If a gamer opts not to renew their Stadia Pro membership, they will lose access to the games and discounts offered exclusively to Pro subscribers, but they will be able keep playing the games they purchased, and they will have access to the Stadia store to purchase additional games.

Google has also announced that five new games are going to be available for purchase on Stadia, ahead of more games like DOOM Eternal and Orcs Must Die.

Broadcom’s new BCM4389 chip brings Wi-Fi 6E support to smartphones

Wi-Fi 6E is an extension to the Wi-Fi 6 standard and it lets devices operate in the 6 GHz spectrum. An additional 1200MHz can be split into fourteen 80MHz or seven wider 160MHz channels, thus offering higher throughputs. It was announced just over a month ago by the Wi-Fi Alliance, but the FCC still hasn’t approved the use of the 6 GHz spectrum. Though, it looks like Broadcom is placing its bets to become among one of the first to adopt it. The company’s new BCM4389 is a WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.0 compatible chip with a couple of welcoming features.

BCM4389 uses a 16nm manufacturing process in comparison to 28nm found on its predecessor, BCM4375. If you need a refresher of the brain, the smaller the nanometer manufacturing process of the chipset, the smaller the distance between transistors. This results in faster and more power-efficient operating of the device. BCM4389 also supports Tri-band Simultaneous (TBS) radio which uses the third radio for background scans and checks which doesn’t require much power.

Wi-Fi 6E

Broadcom also promised Bluetooth improvements, such as two times faster pairing time and the support of BT MIMO. The latter will theoretically eliminate audio chopping on Bluetooth connected devices. BCM4389 also doubles the maximum bandwidth capability to 2 Gbps in smartphones.

Broadcom chipsets are used by companies such as Apple and Samsung in their mainstream smartphone series. I would expect the arrival of Wi-Fi 6E supported devices by next year. FCC approval should also be in place by that time.

BCM4389 also supports Tri-band Simultaneous (TBS) radio which uses the third radio for background scans and checks which doesn’t require much power.

Wi-Fi 6E

Broadcom also promised Bluetooth improvements, such as two times faster pairing time and the support of BT MIMO. The latter will theoretically eliminate audio chopping on Bluetooth connected devices. BCM4389 also doubles the maximum bandwidth capability to 2 Gbps in smartphones.

Broadcom chipsets are used by companies such as Apple and Samsung in their mainstream smartphone series. I would expect the arrival of Wi-Fi 6E supported devices by next year. FCC approval should also be in place by that time.
