Vivo S1Pro with 48MP Samsung GM1, Snapdragon 665, and Super AMOLED display launches in India

Vivo S1 was launched in India in August 2019 as part of the company’s new series of “S”tylish smartphones. It came with a triple rear camera setup at a time when smartphone brands were at the early stages of experimenting with more than two rear cameras on mid-range smartphones. Along with snazzy colors, the Vivo S1 came with a Super AMOLED display, fast 18W charging, and up to 128GB storage. But despite these features and a pretty hefty price-tag, Vivo compromised in a few areas. The Vivo S1 was limited to a 16MP camera and had a micro-USB port. To rectify these shortcomings, the company has now launched its successor – the Vivo S1Pro – with 48MP quad cameras and other new features.

The Vivo S1Pro has been available in Southeast Asian regions including the Philipines since November as the “S1 Pro.” Although the Indian variant comes without spacing in the name, it is identical in terms of specifications. It is powered by a Snapdragon 665 SoC and comes with 8GB of RAM. There’s 128GB of storage onboard which can be expanded by up to 256GB with a microSD card. The Vivo S1Pro features the same 6.38-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED panel with a U-shaped notch as its predecessor.

When it comes to diamond-shaped quad cameras on the back of the Vivo S1, the setup now includes a 48MP Samsung ISOCELL Bright GM1 sensor. While the 8MP wide-angle camera with a 108º wide field of view and the 2MP depth sensor from the S1 have been retained, there’s a new 2MP macro camera in the camera setup. On the front, the 32MP selfie camera remains unchanged.

The 4,500mAh battery and the 18W fast charging support remain the same but Vivo has updated the USB port to Type-C. Besides the black and the white colors of the Vivo S1Pro present in the Philipines, Vivo has also introduced a new blue color with the launch in India. The back panel, however, is still made of plastic when Vivo’s sister brand Realme is offering glass back panels for a much lower price.

In terms of software, the Vivo S1Pro runs the company’s custom Android skin – FuntouchOS v9.2 – based on Android 9 Pie. We can expect an Android 10 update to be available sometime in 2020.

Dell XPS 13 gets a 2020 refresh with 10th Gen Intel Ice Lake chips and Ubuntu-based Developer Edition

Just a week ahead of CES 2020, Dell has lifted the covers off the updated Dell XPS 13 — a thin and light 13.4-inch notebook featuring 10th-Gen Intel Core Ice Lake processors. Along with the new processors, the device features a new display with a 16:10 aspect ratio and minimal bezels on the bottom, Iris Plus Graphics, up to 32GB of LPDDR4X-3733 RAM (soldered) and up to 2TB PCIe solid-state storage.

Dell XPS 13

As per a recent report from AnandTech, the new XPS 13 makes use of an updated cooling system with two fans, two heat pipes, and multiple air inlets to compensate for the extra heat generated by the more powerful processors. For connectivity, the device features a 2×2 Killer Wi-Fi 6 + Bluetooth 5.0 adapter, two Thunderbolt 3 ports, a microSD card reader, and a 3.5mm headphone/microphone combo jack.

Dell XPS 13

The 16:10 display on the Dell XPS 13 2020 comes in two variants, including a 1920×1200 panel with full sRGB coverage and a 3840×2400 UHD+ panel with support for 90 percent of the DCI-P3 space and HDR 400 certification. Both variants are also Dolby Vision certified ensuring good visual quality for content consumption. The notebook comes in a black or white CNC-machined aluminum chassis, it measures in at just 14.8mm thick and weighs between 1.2 and 1.27 kg depending on the touch support. Speaking of touch support, the trackpad on the updated XPS 13 is also slightly larger for better usability.

Powering the new XPS 13 is a 52 watt-hour battery rated for up to 19 hours of use on a single charge for the FHD+ variant. The notebook will be made available in the US and select European countries starting January 7 with prices starting at $999.99 for the Core i5 variant with 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, and the FHD+ display. Along with the Windows 10-based models, Dell will also be shipping a Developer Edition featuring Ubuntu 18.04LTS which is expected to be slightly cheaper than the other models. It’s also worth noting that the older XPS 13 powered by Intel’s Comet Lake CPUs will co-exist in the market with the new model.

[Update 2: Invisible Camera teaser] OnePlus will show off a concept product at CES 2020

Update 2 (01/03/2020 @ 4:40 AM ET): OnePlus has teased the “invisible camera” and color-shifting glass technology on the concept smartphone.

Update 1 (12/17/2019 @ 5:55 AM ET): Shortly after this article was published, OnePlus sent out a press release to confirm that the company is going to showcase its first concept smartphone. Scroll to the bottom for more information.

OnePlus is gearing up for an eventful 2020. Everyone, of course, expects the Chinese company to launch the next OnePlus flagship pair; and we have already seen leaks of the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro, giving us a fair idea of what to expect. What really surprised everyone was the renders of the OnePlus 8 Lite, a phone that is rumored to be OnePlus’ first mid-range smartphone in more than four years. OnePlus has also been teasing everyone with its presence at CES 2020, and now, the company is teasing the OnePlus Concept One.

OnePlus’ CEO first put out a teaser a few days ago, but other than the company’s presence at CES 2020, the teaser did not reveal much. Now, OnePlus’ official Weibo has revealed the name “OnePlus Concept One”.

OnePlus Concept One

The first guess for the teaser would be a concept smartphone, but owing to the tribute the name pays to the OnePlus One, the company’s first smartphone. But the teaser does not actually mention “phone” anywhere, so our guess remains a guess at best. The Chinese text within the teaser translates into “Variable Design, Variable Future”, which is still very vague and does not shed any light on the exact specifics of the announcement.

We’ll have to wait for CES 2020 to know exactly what OnePlus has planned and what the OnePlus Concept One is. There’s also a possibility that we get some more teasers as a run-up to the announcement — but since this is a concept that is unlikely to be marketed as a consumer product, the announcement itself can be equated with a teaser. We’ll find out soon enough.

Update: OnePlus confirms the OnePlus Concept One is its first concept smartphone

OnePlus has formally announced that the OnePlus Concept One is its first-ever concept smartphone.

OnePlus Concept One

The name itself, Concept One, is a clear promise that this device is only the first in a series to come  and shows OnePlus’ commitment to applied, innovative technology – bringing users an ever smoother, faster, and more “burdenless” experience. The OnePlus Concept One, demonstrates a vision of both new technology and alternate design approach for the future of smartphones.

The “Alternate Design” element indicates that this might just be OnePlus’ first foldable smartphone, though we are still guessing on what this smartphone could be.

Update 2: OnePlus Concept One’s “Invisible Camera” teased

OnePlus took to Twitter to tease the “invisible camera” setup on the OnePlus Concept One.

In the teaser, we see the OnePlus logo on a glass panel, and then after a few moments, the camera setup appears above the logo. The text on the tweet mentions the use of color-shifting glass technology for an “invisible camera” setup.

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab A4s is an upcoming mid-range 8″ tablet

Samsung launched its flagship Galaxy Tab S6 (review) back in October last year featuring a stunning display and top-of-the-line specifications. Late last month, the company confirmed that it was also prepping up the launch of a 5G version of the tablet for users who wish to be on the bleeding edge and experience faster data speeds on their device. But Samsung’s tablet efforts aren’t limited to the flagship space. The company is also working on a mid-range tablet in the Galaxy Tab A series, which has previously been spotted on the Wi-Fi Alliance’s website.

The upcoming mid-range tablet, which goes by the model number SM-T307U, has now also been spotted on the Bluetooth SIG website along with the Galaxy Tab A4 S branding, as per a recent report from GizmoChina. Both these certifications suggest that the tablet is about to hit the market soon. In terms of specifications, the Bluetooth SIG certification doesn’t reveal much about the tablet. However, an FCC listing of the device reveals that it will feature an 8.39-inch display and will measure in at 201.9 x 124.4 mm (length x breadth) and 237.1 mm diagonally. The listing also notes that the device will pack in a respectable 4,860 mAh Li-ion battery with support for 15-watt fast charging. Connectivity options include Bluetooth, ,WiFi a/b/g/n/ac, GPS, ANT+, LTE, and WCDMA.

While we don’t have any further information about its specifications, a separate report from Sammobile suggests that the device will be powered by a Samsung Exynos chip and will feature 32GB of onboard storage. The device will also include support for dual-band WiFi and will run Android 9.0 Pie out of the box. As of now, we have no information from the company regarding the upcoming Galaxy Tab A4s, but since the device has already cleared certifications it shouldn’t be long before Samsung brings it to the market.
