OxygenOS Open Beta 7 for the OnePlus 7 series brings new optimized charging and Chromatic reading mode

OnePlus runs three streams of software for its devices: Closed Beta, Open Beta, and the MP/official stable builds. As the name implies, the closed beta builds are available to only a closed group of testers, while the Open Beta extends pre-release software to a wider audience. This allows the OnePlus team to iron out any bugs and test out features with a wider audience, before rolling out changes to the stable release channel. After Open Beta 6, OnePlus is now rolling out OxygenOS Open Beta 7 for the OnePlus 7 series, bring over some new optimizations to charging, and changes to the reading mode.

Changelog for OxygenOS Open Beta 7 for OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro is as follows:

• System:
  • Added an optimized charging feature to improve battery performance based on usage (Settings – Battery – Optimized charging)
  • Optimized the RAM management
  • Fixed the issue with auto-record toast messages in the contact app
  • Fixed the wrong time format in the status bar
  • Improved system stability and general bug fixes
• Reading mode:
  • Added the Chromatic effect option to adapt color range and saturation intelligently for a better reading experience (Settings – Display – Reading mode – Turn on reading mode – Chromatic effect)

The update should be rolling out as an OTA in the next few days to users who are already running Open Beta 6 on the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro.

Samsung’s clamshell folding phone leaks in multiple live images

The Samsung Galaxy Fold is clearly one of the most fascinating and futuristic smartphones we saw this year. For this device, Samsung used the tradition book layout but for its next folding smartphone, the company might go for a more ergonomic design. Earlier this year at the Samsung Developer Conference, it teased different form factors for its next folding smartphone with potential options including a clamshell design similar to the recently resurrected Razr from Motorola. And now, we have come across some leaked hands-on images of what could be Samsung’s clamshell phone, hinting at Samsung’s likely design choices for this prospective vertically-folding smartphone.

There’s no formal Samsung branding on the smartphone which suggests it could possibly be a prototype. But the rounded frame and the shape of the speaker grille ascribe to the standard Samsung design language. Plus, the smartphone is running One UI in the Chinese language.

Design-wise, the phone opens up to look like a standard bar phone with volume buttons on the right. The display has a hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera. Unlike the standard Galaxy Fold or the Motorola Razr, there’s no color display on the outside. Here, a tiny monochrome screen near the bottom shows the time, the date, and the battery percentage. Beside this display is a dual-camera setup along with a flash. While the blogger who shared these images did not share any details about the cameras, another report in the past said that the Galaxy Fold 2 might feature a 108MP Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor and another module for 5X optical zoom. We cannot confirm this as of now.

If reports are to be believed, Samsung might unveil the next generation of the Galaxy Fold alongside Galaxy S11 series in February 2020 but we’re awaiting more details before we can join the dots and confirm that the Galaxy Fold 2 will, in fact, be this device. We hope to learn more in the coming weeks as we close in on the company’s major launch event in early 2020.

Google Podcasts gets a dark theme on Android

The new system-wide dark mode is arguably one of the most popular features in Android 10. The built-in dark mode completely transforms the UI and it also enables a dark theme in supported third-party apps. Several Google apps also come with support for the new dark theme and over the last couple of months the company has released dark mode support to even more apps. Apps like the Google Play Store, Gmail, Google Photos, Google Fit, Google Play Books, etc. have already received support for the new dark theme. And now, the Google Podcasts app is the latest to join the club.

Several users on Reddit have reported seeing a new dark mode in the latest release of Google Podcasts (v1.0.0.266384425). As with other Google apps, the new dark theme in Google Podcasts brings a complete refresh with everything from the homepage to the settings getting a dark background and light text. The player has also received a dark background with contrasty accents for the buttons and progress bar. However, the dark theme currently isn’t available to all users and I wasn’t able to trigger it on my Xiaomi Redmi K20 Pro even with the latest update installed.

Some users in the Reddit thread suggest that the dark mode can only be enabled if you’re enrolled in the Google app beta program, while others claim that the dark mode was rolled out as part of a server-side update. While it isn’t exactly clear how the new dark mode can be enabled in Google Podcasts right now, it’s safe to assume that it should automatically roll out to all users over the next couple of days. You can download the latest version of the app from the link down below and check to see if the dark mode has been enabled on your device.

Huawei P40 and P40 Pro renders reveal flat display, large camera modules

Earlier today, Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Technologies Consumer Business Group, confirmed that the Huawei P40 will be launched in March. Now, just a few hours later, we’re getting our first glimpse of the device thanks to leaked renders. The renders don’t show a ton of detail, but we can glean some information about the devices.

First of all, there are two devices: the Huawei P40 and P40 Pro. The camera modules are large and very similar to the trends we’ve been seeing in late 2019. The P40 may have as many as four cameras, but the number of cameras in the Pro model is unknown at this time. The camera specifications may include a 64MP Sony IMX686 sensor, 20MP wide-angle, and 12MP zoom. The back of the P40 series is glass and both models feature curved edges.

On the front, the Huawei P40 has a flat display coming in at 6.1 or 6.2-inches. The P40 Pro, on the other hand, has the “premium” curved display edges and is 6.5 or 6.7-inches. One interesting design note is the corners on the metal frame. They come up past the display on the corners, presumably for durability, and it looks pretty cool. The displays are OLED and will feature in-display fingerprint sensors.

Both P40 devices have USB-C, bottom speakers, buttons on the right side, and no headphone jack. Some of the other loose specifications include 5,500 mAh battery in the Pro model, 50W fast charging, Kirin 990 SoC, and Android 10-based EMUI 10. They will likely launch without Google apps and services as well. There’s a lot left to learn about these phones before March.

Modded Fossil Smartwatches app extends notification support to many more apps on Fossil Hybrid HR

The Fossil Hybrid HR is one of the most interesting smartwatches around. Rather than opt for a full-blown smartwatch on the Android Wear platform, the Hybrid HR opts for a traditional watch dial and physical watch hands, on top of a low-powered monochromatic always-on display. This allows the watch to stay a watch at all times while offering features such as fitness tracking capabilities, weather information, and app notifications, along with exemplary battery life. However, some features are handled through the official Fossil Hybrid Smartwatches app, which lacks some functionality. If you are looking to realize the hybrid smartwatches full potential, check out this modded Fossil Hybrid Smartwatches app.

This modded Fossil Hybrid Smartwatches app by Reddit user /u/coronafire started off as a way to fix some of the limitations that existed in the official watch. The official app previously supported notifications from only a handful of apps, with no way to display any notifications from other apps. So the modded app fixed this, as well as introduced a way to display the icon of the app which sent the notification. The modded app also allowed the watch to respect the phone’s DND setting, a feature that was curiously missing. The dev was also working on using custom backgrounds for the display, but the official app has just now incorporated the same, along with the ability to display notifications from more apps.

The official app still does not display icons properly for these notifications, and also does not have DND incorporated, so the modded app still retains utility.

Modded Fossil Hybrid Smartwatches app 

Since this is a mod of the official application, you need to uninstall the official application to install this one, because of the change in signature with which the app is signed with, because of its unofficial nature. If you are worried about the unofficial nature of the app, you can always check out the source code since the mod is open-sourced.
