OxygenOS 10.0.3 brings November 2019 security patches to the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro

OnePlus has been at the top of its game while providing Android 10 updates for its devices. Even though some of the updates were broken and then delayed, the company has now managed to push stable Android 10 updates for the OnePlus 6/6T and OnePlus 7/7 Pro. The OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro have even received a minor hotfix update (OOS 10.0.1) and a larger update (OOS 10.0.2) since the first stable release. And now, the company has started rolling out OxygenOS 10.0.3 for the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro.

OxygenOS 10.0.3

The latest update, OxygenOS 10.0.3, for the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro brings the Android security patches for November 2019, along with a few bug fixes and improvements for system stability. Here’s the official changelog for the latest OTA update:

  • System
    • Updated Android security patch to 2019.11
    • Improved system stability and general bug fixes

As with all updates from the company, the OxygenOS 10.0.3 update for the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro will be rolled out in a staged fashion. This means that the OTA will initially be released to a limited number of users. Once the company confirms that there are no critical bugs in the release, it will be rolled out to the rest of the users in a few days. As of now, we don’t have access to the download links for the update package, however, we will update this article once we have access to the same.

[Update: The End] Microsoft will end all Windows 10 Mobile support in December

Update 12/11/19 @ 1:20 AM ET: Support for Windows 10 Mobile has finally ended. Scroll to the bottom for more information. The article as published on January 19, 2019, is preserved as below.

It’s practically ancient history at this point, but the XDA-Developers was originally a Windows Mobile-focused website. Even the name “XDA” comes from the O2 Xda, a Windows Mobile PDA. That’s why from time to time we like to cover news from the other realm. The tile-based operating system never really made it to the mainstream. The lack of applications, even from companies like Facebook, made using their devices a pain. For better or worse, Microsoft has acknowledged their defeat in the mobile OS war a long time ago. They’ve been releasing Microsoft applications for both Android and iOS for the past couple of years, and have shifted all their mobile attention towards promoting their services. It’s been more than a year since the company announced the end of life for Windows Phone 8.1. Now, they’re letting us know that Windows 10 Mobile will soon follow its predecessor.

The Verge noticed the addition of an end-of-support date for Windows 10 Mobile in an official online document. Microsoft states that only devices eligible for version 1709 of the system will receive security patch support until December of 2019. For version 1703 (which runs on Lumia 640 and Lumia 640 XL), support will end on June 11th, 2019. Neither of those two versions has received a major functional update in some time, nor has Microsoft released new Windows Mobile-powered hardware. If, for whatever reason, you still want to hold on to your old phone, then consider unlocking its bootloader. You can do so for any Lumia and non-Lumia Windows Phone device.

Officially, Microsoft recommends its users move to Android or iOS devices, for obvious reasons. If you are a die-hard fan of Microsoft, or just want to use some of their apps, you can do that on both of those platforms. Microsoft even has a launcher for Android which integrates with Windows 10 and Cortana for cross-platform multi-tasking. What we’ve been expecting for a long time has finally happened, and none of us should pretend to be surprised. Focusing their development effort on other segments, like cross-platform apps, has shown far better results for Microsoft, anyway.

Google tests a radically new UI for Chrome’s new tab page

While the Play Store has a ton of great browser apps to choose from, Google’s own Chrome app reigns supreme for several different reasons. One of these is the fact that Google keeps bringing new useful features to the app with each successive update. The company has already released several useful features like VR support, Adaptive Icons for installed PWAs, and more to the app in the recent past. Most recently, we discovered the Google was planning on adding a Games Hub to Chrome on Android. And now, the latest update for Chrome Canary suggests that Google is testing a new UI design for the new tab page.

The redesigned UI for the new tab page was spotted on Chrome Canary v81.0.3991.0 and it looks a fair bit cleaner than the current new tab UI. As you can see in the screenshots below a majority of the UI elements have been moved closer to the top of the display. The Google logo is smaller in size and rests in the center at the top with the search bar right underneath.

Google Chrome Canary Google Chrome Canary Google Chrome Canary

Links to your favorite and recently visited web pages have also moved up along with the search bar, leaving a whole lot of empty space towards the bottom. Instead of showing suggested articles, the empty space towards the bottom is now utilized for tab organization and allows users to group tabs together for easier access.

Switching to incognito mode is also a whole lot simpler with the new UI as the feature now has a dedicated toggle right at the top next to the Google logo. The new UI is being tested with a handful of users and if you’re one of the lucky few you wouldn’t need to enable any experimental flags to turn it on. However, we can confirm that you can force enable the new UI in Chrome Canary v81.0.3991.0 by turning on the enable-duet-tabstrip-integration flag in chrome://flags.

[Update: 12GB variant goes on sale] ASUS ROG Phone II with crazy specs and a crazier pricing launches in India

Update 1 (12/11/19 @ 00:00 AM EST): 12GB RAM variant of the ASUS ROG Phone II will be available in India starting today.

The original launch article from September 23, 2019, remains unchanged.

ASUS has been making smartphones for quite many years now but if there’s something that has really turned heads is its gaming smartphones. Branded under ASUS’ Republic of Gamers (ROG) trademark, the gaming phones are powered in line with the laptops under the ROG brand name. Back in July, ASUS launched its second gaming smartphone – the ASUS ROG Phone II – in a partnership with Tencent. Outrageously impressive in all senses, the ASUS ROG Phone II is the magnum opus of smartphone hardware and initial benchmarks tell us that it is one of the most powerful devices in the market. ASUS is now bringing the ROG Phone II to India with the same ludicrous hardware and startling pricing.

Buy: ASUS ROG Phone II 8GB/128GB (₹37,999) | ASUS ROG Phone II 12GB/512GB (₹59,999)

The ASUS ROG Phone II is no ordinary smartphone and was the first smartphone to be powered by the Snapdragon 855 Plus. In India too, the ROG Phone II will be the first smartphone to feature the Snapdragon 855 Plus but that’s not the only highlight on the new device. The prime core on the CPU and the Adreno 640 GPU have been overclocked to 2.96GHz and 675MHz, respectively.

The ROG Phone II comes with a superb 120Hz refresh rate, a parameter still unmatched for AMOLED displays. The display is protected under Gorilla Glass 6 and is certified for 10-bit HDR content. Users can either set a global parameter for the higher refresh rate or even choose the refresh rate settings per app. The display has a touch sampling rate of 240Hz and a 49ms latency.

There’s up to 12GB of RAM on the ASUS ROG Phone II and it gets up to 512GB of storage with a UFS 3.0 technology. There’s a 3D vapor chamber to keep heat under control but if that’s not adequate, ASUS has added a couple of heat real vents on the phone. The smartphone doesn’t come with physical fans like on the Nubia Red Magic 3, but you can use one of the external fans available for purchase separately.

The ASUS ROG Phone II is perhaps the only flagship smartphone to have a massive 6,000mAh battery. There are two USB-C ports on the phone – one at the bottom and the other on the side to allow charging in both – landscape and portrait – configurations. The smartphone supports up to 30W fast charging and the proprietary HyperCharge technology allows gamers to use the phone even while charging without any heating. ASUS claims that one hour of charging reaps almost 36 hours of backup while the smartphone can last 7+ hours while continuous PUBG gameplay, but at 60Hz display refresh rate.

For an engaging gaming experience, there’s a dual high-end XYZ vibrational motor for directional vibration. There are two front-facing speakers on the smartphone for a fierce throughput. For India, ASUS has also added an outdoor mode and FM radio to the smartphone. Additionally, the ultrasonic, pressure-sensitive air trigger buttons have been also been added to the smartphone just like the first generation ROG Phone. The functionality of these triggers can be customized and there’s a protection for accidental touches. ASUS says they’ll soon allow customization sliding actions on to the ROG Phone II.

In terms of camera, there’s a 48MP Sony IMX586 camera along with a 13MP wide-angle sensor on the back. On the front, there’s a 24MP camera. Since the rear camera setup is the same as the ASUS ZenFone 6 (ASUS 6Z India)

On the software front, there’s little customization over the stock Android UI. ASUS also allows unlocking the bootloader on the ROG Phone II but there’s currently a dearth of custom ROMs, especially those which support the triggers correctly. In the current interface, you can choose between an AOSP-like UI or a more aggressive ROG UI. There’s only a single app on top of the clean UI and that is the Armory Crate app which lets users to manage gaming-related resources on the smartphone.
