YouTube educational creators will be able to offer courses starting next year

YouTube has evolved over the past decade, going from a place to just find entertainment to a platform where you can learn about nearly anything. Now, YouTube is investing in the educational segment by catering to the educators on its platform by introducing YouTube Player for Education. The new feature will keep educational environments free of ads, external links, or recommendations. Before it rolls out to all educators on its platform, YouTube will first partner with educational technology companies in the United States like EDpuzzle, Purdue University, Purdue Global, and more.

The goal of YouTube Player for Education is to eliminate distractions from educational videos, giving learners a better experience. Going forward, it will also enhance the experience it offers in Google Classroom. Furthermore, qualified creators will be able to offer courses starting next year. The courses can be free or paid and will give educators a new space to provide a structured learning environment. The courses will first be available to those in the United States and South Korea as a beta, with the service expanding to more regions later. If this kind of learning platform sounds familiar, it’s because it already exists with services like MasterClass, Skillshare, or Coursera.

In addition to the new changes, YouTube will implement Quizzes. It will allow creators to create quizzes to test viewers. This service could help viewers to better understand what they learned and also what they might need more work on. Quizzes will roll out to users as a beta in the next few months. Creators with access to the Community tab will have access to this feature starting next year. While it is great to see YouTube making new tools for educational creators on its platform, it will be interesting to see how courses on the platform will work.

The Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II offers a new design that is not only smaller but also lighter than its predecessor. However, that isn’t the only change, as the new earbuds will offer Bose CustomTune sound calibration technology. As soon as the earbuds are removed from their case, they will start to play a tone. The tone paired with the earbud’s microphone will measure the ear canal, creating the best experience of noise-cancellation possible. Furthermore, the technology can target specific frequencies, allowing the noise cancellation to become adaptive to one’s surroundings. It can accomplish this with its four microphones that are dedicated to each earbud, which are used to sense sound frequency changes in an instant.

In addition, when it comes to music, CustomTune can optimize sounds coming from the earbuds, allowing music to be heard as the artist intended. It can also make users hyper-aware of their surroundings with “Aware Mode with ActiveSense.” The new mode will offer improved transparency settings, allowing sounds to pass through to the user in the most natural sounding way possible. Of course, none of this matters if the comfort isn’t there. So, Bose has engineered a new “eartip Fit Kit,” with ear tips and interchangeable stability bands so that a user can maximize comfort. Bose says that there are up to nine different configurations possible. When it comes to protection from the elements, the QuietComfort Earbuds II’s have an IPX4 rating for sweat and water resistance.

The earbuds will also feature touch controls that will enable actions like play, pause, skip, and more. Bose plans to add more functionality at a later date. The earbuds come with a sleek charging case that can be topped up via USB-C, with the earbuds providing up to six hours of battery life and an additional three charges with the case. HTC adds face and eye tracking with new Vive Focus 3 accessories

HTC has announced two new accessories for its Vive Focus 3, the Focus 3 Facial Tracker and Focus 3 Eye Tracker. These two new devices will bring more natural experiences to VR, offering more immersive experiences with face and eye tracking.  

Up until now, digital avatars in the VR world were pretty good, but one thing that they lacked was expression. Users could never relay facial expressions to digital friends because face and eye tracking wasn’t an option. With the Focus 3 Facial Tracker, users can convey a wide range of emotions thanks to the mono-tracking camera that can detect lips, jaw, cheeks, chin, teeth, and more. This tracking method will allow the camera to capture the most realistic facial expressions and mouth movements. Perhaps even more impressive is that with 60Hz tracking, users can synchronize mouth movements with their voice, so interactions look as real as possible in the VR space. Best of all, there isn’t much that needs to be done when installing the new accessory, just plug it into the VR headset via USB-C.  

Like the Facial Tracker, the Focus 3 Eye Tracker will introduce more realism into the world of VR with realistic eye movements like blinking and squinting. The device will have a dual camera setup with IR illuminators that will be able to capture pupil direction, size, and even position. The unit will attach via magnets, making it easy to take on and off the Vive Focus 3. Furthermore, it’s lightweight. Beyond the previously mentioned benefits, eye tracking will allow for “foveated rendering.” This is a great optimization technique where the headset directs the highest fidelity graphics where the user is currently looking. This not only improves the user’s experience but also allows Focus 3 to process graphics more efficiently.

Android Privacy Sandbox Developer Preview 5 is here with more controls for developers

Android’s Privacy Sandbox has been in development since its announcement in February of this year. It’s a multi-year initiative to introduce more private advertising solutions to end-users and is made possible thanks to both the Topics API and FLEDGE. The objective is to preserve user privacy by default while still supporting the mobile ecosystem that relies on effective advertising to sustain free and advertisement-funded applications. It’s a unique-to-Android approach with a new SDK that’s isolated from the rest of the app’s code, and its goal is to replace Ad ID eventually. The latest Developer Preview is now here, and it adds data validation enhancements, and API signature changes across the privacy-preserving APIs and the SDK Runtime.

Privacy Sandbox Developer Preview 5 is really only an update for developers to test out the Privacy Sandbox and give more feedback to Google. Feedback given over the past few months, Google says, has led to real changes, including allowing reflection API usage. Additional design proposals have also been published on FLEDGE services, mediation, and app-to-web measurement, thanks to developer feedback. There are some changes to FLEDGE that require developers to make changes to their code, which are outlined in the release notes.

If you want to start testing Privacy Sandbox as a developer, you can check out the official instructions to set up the SDK and download system images on the Android Virtual Device emulator or supported Pixel devices. There’s still a beta scheduled to arrive by the end of the year, with 2023 set to see scaled testing commence. These previews and betas are independent of the Android 13 release cadence and have been tested separately over the last few months. The final version will also have user-facing controls in the settings app.

New features in Privacy Sandbox include cross-app and web measurement in the Attribution Reporting API and an updated taxonomy for the classification of mobile apps in the Topics API. There are also additional restrictions and limitations in the FLEDGE on Android API that developers will need to take into account.
