MIUI 13: Here’s everything you need to know about Xiaomi’s latest Android skin

At a launch event in China on December 28, 2021, Xiaomi unveiled the latest version of its Android skin — MIUI 13. As you’d expect, MIUI 13 comes with a bunch of new features and performance improvements, including new privacy features, a new system font, a bunch of cool wallpapers, and even a version optimized for tablets. MIUI 13: New Features and Performance Improvements

MIUI 13 brings several performance improvements over the previous release — MIUI 12.5. Xiaomi claims that the latest version of its custom Android skin offers better app fluency with 15% fewer dropped frames in third-party applications when compared to the previous release. Xiaomi’s native apps also run better on the new release, with 23% fewer dropped frames.

Xiaomi claims that MIUI 13 ranks at the top in Master Lu’s fluency test, beating Android skins from other OEMs on devices across all price points. Xiaomi has also improved the multitasking capabilities on MIUI 13, and the software now lets you have up to 14 apps open in the background on a flagship device at any given time.

Xiaomi has also worked on making MIUI 13 more secure for the end-users with new features like face verification protection, privacy watermark, and fraud protection. At the moment, we don’t have the complete details for all these features. However, we do know that the privacy watermark feature will let you add a watermark to images that you share to prevent misuse.

New privacy and security features

The fraud protection feature, on the other hand, consists of a couple of different measures to protect users from online and telecom frauds, like “E-fraud warning,” “Official logo,” Fraud application installation interception,” and “Transfer protection.”

MiSans font

As mentioned earlier, MIUI 13 also includes a new system font called MiSans. It’s a flat and minimal font with rich Opentype features, like automatically adjusting the height of hyphens to uppercase and lowercase letters. The font is free to download for both personal and commercial use.

MIUI 13 live wallpapers

Furthermore, MIUI 13 comes with a host of new live wallpapers that showcase crystal formation. Xiaomi says that these wallpapers were captured using a polarization microscope via 8K timelapse photography. We’ll make sure to share these new wallpapers with you as soon as the first build of MIUI 13 starts rolling out to devices.

MIUI 13 widgets

In addition, MIUI 13 also includes support for a bunch of new widgets, like “Super Countdown Day” and “Water Measuring Cup”. The company only gave us a glimpse of these new widgets during the launch event, but we expect to learn more details in the coming days.

Along with MIUI 13 for smartphones, Xiaomi also announced MIUI 13 Pad during today’s launch event. MIUI 13 Pad is an optimized version of Xiaomi’s Android skin for large-screen devices. It brings some additional features to help users make the most of the extra screen real estate. Xiaomi has also worked with developers to optimize apps for this new tablet interface and the company claims that over 3000 apps have already been adapted for large screens.

Along with all the new features mentioned above, MIUI 13 Pad includes a few additional features to improve the multitasking experience on large-screen devices. These include features like a new shortcut to quickly switch between full screen and windowed modes, window scaling, a global taskbar with drag and drop support for multitasking, and more. MIUI 13 Pad also offers support for a bunch of keyboard shortcuts to enhance productivity.

MIUI 13: Rollout Schedule

Xiaomi plans to start rolling out MIUI 13 to the first batch of devices by the end of January 2022. The new Xiaomi 12, Xiaomi 12 Pro, and the Xiaomi 12X will be among the first devices to receive the update, along with the Mi 11 Ultra, the Mi 11 Pro, and the Mi 11.

Honor Magic V specifications and renders leaked ahead of the official launch

Honor will soon be unveiling its first-ever foldable phone to take on the lies of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and OPPO Find N. The company has been teasing the upcoming phone on social media for a while now. Just a few days ago, the company gave us a sneak peek at the phone’s design and confirmed the launch date. Now ahead of the official launch, leaked specifications and renders of the Honor Magic V have surfaced online.

Leaked renders and specifications of the Honor Magic V come courtesy of Ishaan Agarwal and MySmartPrice. As you can see in the renders attached below, the phone features a design similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 3. The back houses a triple camera setup with the Honor logo perpendicular to the camera module. Meanwhile, the outer cover display has a centered hole-punch for the selfie camera. The phone is said to come in three colors: Orange, Black, and White.

According to Agarwal, the Honor Magic V will feature a 7.9-inch OLED main display with 2272 x 1984 screen resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. Meanwhile, the outer cover display is said to be a 6.45-inch FHD+ panel offering a 120Hz refresh rate. The phone will reportedly be powered by Qualcomm’s newly announced Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, paired with 12GB RAM and 256GB/512GB storage. In terms of camera hardware, we’re told the phone will feature a triple camera setup consisting of a 50MP f/1.9 main shooter, a 50MP f/2.2 ultra-wide camera, and a 50MP f/2.0 “Spectrum Enhanced” (likely a monochrome sensor) camera. Over on the front, you’ll find a 42MP selfie shooter. Elsewhere, the Honor Magic V will reportedly pack a 4,760mAh battery with 66W fast charging support and has DTS:X Ultra speakers. Finally, it will run MagicUI 6 based on Android 12 out-of-the-box.

The Honor Magic V is officially launching in China on January 1o, so we won’t have to wait long to learn more about the company’s first foldable offering.

Samsung showcases four new foldable concepts at CES 2022

Samsung is the market leader when it comes to foldable smartphones. The company’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Flip Z 3 are two of the best foldable smartphones you can buy right now. At CES 2022, the South Korean electronics giant made it clear it’s committed to the foldable future and showcased four new concepts devices, including the Samsung Flex G and Flex Slidable.

First up we have the bi-folding Flex S concept which folds in and out in an S-like shape. The device can be used as a smartphone or tablet depending on how you fold it. The Flex S isn’t exactly new as Samsung first showed off a similar concept at Display Week 2021 back in May last year.

The Flex G, on the other hand, folds inwards twice. Samsung bills it as a more durable option compared to other foldables as the unique G-shaped design protects the display from scratches and external impacts when fully folded.

Beyond smartphone and tablet-oriented designs, Samsung is looking to bring its foldable tech to laptops and notebooks as well. The company’s Flex Note concept is basically a large display that can be folded and carried like a 13-inch laptop. When unfolded it becomes a wide 17-inch monitor.

Finally, the Flex Slidable concept looks quite similar to OPPO X 2021. The device looks and acts just like a standard slab phone but its display rolls out horizontally with a press of the button to increase the real screen estate. Samsung’s demo shows the expanded display area can be used for apps and shortcuts.

Samsung hasn’t confirmed whether it plans to bring any of these foldable concepts on future Samsung phones.

Schlage announces smart lock with Apple Home Key support

Schlage has announced a new smart lock that comes with Apple Home Key support. The Cupertino giant first introduced the feature in iOS 15 — which allows users to store digital house keys in their Apple Wallet on iPhone and Apple Watch. When you want to control your lock, you only have to tap your device on it. The technology uses NFC and is similar to Apple’s Car Key feature. It’s also worth mentioning that Home Key works for an additional five hours or so after your device’s battery dies — thanks to Power Reserve mode.

The Schlage Encode Plus Smart WiFi Deadbolt was virtually announced at CES 2022. The new lock works with both the Schlage mobile app and Apple HomeKit. You can use either one or both simultaneously to take advantage of everything it has to offer. Both methods allow remote control, but you’d need an Apple Hub — such as a HomePod — if you’re not using the Schlage app. What makes this Schlage lock so special is it being the first in North America to support Apple Home Key. The company highlights some of its features:

Homeowners will enjoy being able to check the status of their deadbolt and lock/unlock the deadbolt remotely from their phone.
Homeowners can create and manage up to 100 access codes from the app, as well as set schedules for those codes for recurring, temporary or permanent access.
Real-time activity logs make it easier to know when a code has been used, and customizable push notifications provide an added layer of security and peace of mind.
Pairing the Schlage Encode Plus deadbolt with the Schlage Home app allows homeowners to use Alexa or Google Assistant to securely control their lock via voice.

It’s also worth noting that the lock supports the traditional, physical key. So you could always depend on that as a last resort option. Based on the features you use, the battery of this lock could last you anywhere between four months and a year. If you’d like to get your hands on it, you will have to wait till next Spring and put aside $299, though.

Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge with 120W fast charging support launched in India

The past few months in India have been rather quiet with respect to phone launches. The Redmi Note 11T did make its way to India at the end of 2021 but there was nothing really special about it. However, that’s changing now with the launch of the Xiaomi 11i and Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge.

Xiaomi reintroduced its ‘i’ series of phones in India with the Mi 10i at the beginning of last year, which offered 5G support and a 108MP camera. Continuing that tradition of introducing new innovations in this series, the Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge is the first phone to come with 120W fast charging in India. It’s accompanied by the more affordable Xiaomi 11i that also charges pretty fast at 67W. Here are all the details about the two devices.

If you went through the specifications of both phones, you would realize that the only difference between the Xiaomi 11i and the Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge is in terms of battery and charging. The standard Xiaomi 11i has a larger 5,160mAh battery with 67W fast charging support. But, the Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge takes it up a notch with 120W fast charging. The battery capacity has been reduced slightly on the HyperCharge variant, though, and you get a 4,500mAh unit. Given the extremely fast charging, the smaller battery size shouldn’t matter too much. After all, Xiaomi claims that you can charge the phone completely from 0-100% in just 15 minutes which is insane.

Apart from that, both phones share the exact same specifications throughout. Under the hood, there’s a MediaTek Dimensity 920 SoC based on the 6nm manufacturing node. It is a mid-range SoC that should ensure great performance on the device. Of course, you also get 5G connectivity with 8 5G bands. The base variant of both devices gets 6GB of RAM along with 128GB of internal storage. The storage can be expanded via a hybrid slot, which means you can either use two SIM cards or a SIM and a micro SD card.

Another highlight of the Xiaomi 11i and 11i HyperCharge is the 108MP primary camera. Of course, Xiaomi has used this sensor on a lot of its phones already so it isn’t something new. But it ensures that the phones are well-rounded in all aspects from performance to cameras to charging. An aspect where Xiaomi has been doing really well on all its upper mid-range devices is the display. The Xiaomi 11i and 11i HyperCharge don’t disappoint in this regard either. The phones get a 6.67-inch OLED display with a refresh rate of 120Hz and HDR10 support.

The phones adopt flat sides along the edges reminiscent of the new iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 design. The frame is made of polycarbonate while the back is glass. Xiaomi has opted for a nice-looking design for the Xiaomi 11i series and the color options complement it well. For those wondering, both the 67W charger for the Xiaomi 11i and the 120W charger for the Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge are provided within the box itself.

The Xiaomi 11 and the Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge will be available in 5 color variants – Pacific Pearl, Stealth Black, Camo Green, Purple Mist and will be available starting from 12 January 2022. The Xiaomi 11i starts at ₹24,999 for the base variant while the Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge starts at ₹26,999. The higher RAM variants are priced at ₹26,999 and ₹28,999, respectively. You will be able to purchase the phones from Flipkart, Mi.com, Mi Home Stores, and official retail partners.
